Kean Surges Past Simmons in Opener

Union, N.J. (11/15/14) – The Kean University women's basketball team had all 16 players see action on their way to an opening 90-49 victory over Simmons College in the season opener for both on Saturday.

Rookie Najha Treadwell led the Cougars (1-0) with a double-double 16 points and 12 rebounds.  Sophomore Liz Brasa led had a game-high 18 points for Simmons (0-1) in the loss.

Kean never trailed in the matchup and used a late first-half surge to widen the advantage in the matchup.  With just over nine minutes to go in the first stanza, Brasa used a layup to cut the deficit to four (19-15).  The Cougars would then go on an 18-0 run over the next six minutes to take a commanding 37-15 lead.  Sophomore Jaquetta Owens closed out the run with a trey, as six different Cougars scored in the span.

The Cougars headed into intermission with 43-21 advantage as senior Stephanie Carlone was the only player in double-digits with 10, followed by Treadwell with eight and 10 boards. 

Kean then paced the second half, leading by as many as 46 on two occasions.  With the win, the Cougars will face Farmingdale State College in the championship of the Kean Classic on Sunday at 3 p.m.  The Rams were 82-72 winners over Keystone College in the tournament opener earlier in the day.  The Giants will take on Simmons in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

Carlone finished with 12 points and four assists while Owens added 11 points, five assists and four steals.
