Bears Edged by Keene State at Key Largo Classic

TAVERNIER, Fla. -- The Bridgewater State University women's basketball team dropped a 67-64 decision to Keene State College in the semifinal round of the 6th Annual Key Largo Classic held at Coral Shores High School in Tavernier, Florida.

The Bears (5-4) will take on Emmanuel College in the tournament consolation game on Thursday afternoon at 3:00 PM.  The Owls (5-3) will face Austin College in the championship game on Thursday at five.

BSU senior guard Elisha Homich (Ludlow, Mass.) paced Bridgewater State with 12 points, five assists, three rebounds and two blocked shots.  Classmate Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.) added 13 points and four rebounds.

Senior forward Carly Kiernan (Topsfield, Mass.) led the way for Keene State off the bench as she posted a double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds.   Freshman guard Stephanie D'Annolfo (Tyngsborough, Mass.) added 17 points, five rebounds and three assists, while junior forward Christan Wojtas (Amherst, Mass.) chipped in with 13 points.

The game of consisted of seven ties and eight lead changes.

Leading by as many as 13 points midway in the second half, the Owls needed some late-game heroics to pull out the non-conference win.  BSU sophomore guard Vanesa Conceicao(New Bedford, Mass.) hit a basket to tie the game at 63-all with 17 seconds to play.

Looking for the go-ahead score in the closing seconds, KSC junior forward Courtney Roberts(Sutton, Mass.) missed a lay-up, but D'Annolfo put in the rebound to give the Owls a 65-63 lead.

The Bears missed a chance to tie the game with seven seconds to play.  D'Annolfo grabbed the rebound and was fouled.  She hit both of her shots from the line to seal the victory.

Keene State shot 49% (25-51) from the floor and held a 44-36 rebounding advantage. The Owls converted on 13 of 23 (56.5%) free throw attempts.

The Bears connected on just 34.5% (20-58) of their field goals including 6-for-24 (25.0) from behind the arc.
