Tufts Downs Trinity In NESCAC Women's Basketball Semifinals

Medford, Mass. - The Tufts University women's basketball team used a late second-half run to earn a 57-47 victory over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in the 2014 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship Semifinals this afternoon at Cousens Gym. The Jumbos will play Amherst tomorrow at noon for the conference championship.
Tufts, who improved to 25-1 overall, will be playing to capture its first NESCAC title.  Trinity finishes their season at 16-9 with its first loss in seven games, achieving its highest win toal since a 17-8 campaign in 2008-09..     

Trinity was led by senior forward Hannah Brickley (Melrose, Mass.) with 15 points and seven boards, while classmate Shantel Hanniford (Nanticket, Mass.) scored 12 and pulled down four rebounds.  Junior Haley Kanner led Tufts with 19 points, hitting eight of 14 shots adding six rebounds and four blocks.

Trinity trailed, 21-15, late in the first half, but a trey by senior guard Abigail Hancock (Casco, Maine) and three-point play from Hanniford tied the game at 25-25 with 4:22 left. The Jumbos went on a 4-0 run to go into halftime with a 31-27 lead.  With the home team leading, 40-38, at the 12:53 mark, the Jumbos outscored Trinity, 12-3, over the next 8:49 to create an 11-point cushion and never looked back.
