Anderson's 12th Double-Double Leads R-MC Past Bridgewater in ODAC Quarterfinals

SALEM, Va. – Sophomore Second Team All-ODAC selection Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, Va./Patrick Henry) recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 21 points and 14 rebounds to lead second-seeded Randolph-Macon past seventh-seeded Bridgewater 96-91 Thursday evening in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament at the Salem Civic Center.

The Yellow Jackets (21-5) advance to the semifinals on Saturday, March 1 at 3 p.m. against the winner of the #3 Lynchburg-#6 Roanoke quarterfinal match.

Anderson was 7 for 10 from the floor and 7 for 7 from the free throw line. She had five offensive rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal.

R-MC had four players score in double figures. Junior Taylor Huber (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry), a First Team All-ODAC selection, led all scorers with 24 points. Junior Sarah Parsons (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker), Second Team All-ODAC, added 22 points and dished out six assists. Sophomore Khajae Hester (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) had 12 points and five assists.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead with five points by Huber. The Eagles (9-17) tied it at 9-9 before a 6-0 run by R-MC pushed the advantage to 15-9 six minutes into the contest. Bridgewater then used a 16-5 spurt to take its largest lead at 25-20 with 8:10 left in the first half. The Yellow Jackets had an 11-3 run to take a 31-28 lead. R-MC scored seven straight to lead 38-31 with just under two minutes left in the period. The Eagles scored the final six points of the half to trail 38-37 at intermission. Huber had 10 points in the half, while Anderson added eight points.

Anderson had nine points in a 13-4 run to start the second half as R-MC built a 51-41 lead. Bridgewater stayed within striking distance and cut the deficit to four at 71-67 with five minutes remaining. The Yellow Jackets scored eight straight to take their largest lead at 79-67 with three minutes to go. The Eagles twice made it a one-possession game. R-MC hit 12 of its final 14 free throws in the final 1:30, including eight straight in the final 40 seconds, to secure the win. Huber was 6 for 6 in the last 30 seconds to hold off the Eagles.

R-MC was 32-42 (.762) from the free throw line, including 25-32 (.781) in the second half. The Yellow Jackets held a 41-37 edge on the boards and forced 22 turnovers.
