Trailing by a point, Sabrina Macaulay was fouled with one second remaining and made 2-of-2 from the line to lift SUNY Fredonia over SUNY Potsdam 74-73 in a nerve-racking finish Saturday afternoon at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium in the Bears' season finale.
Senior forward Jessica Kouzan (Webster, N.Y. / Webster-Schroeder) had previously made a 3-pointer with 1:35 left to give Potsdam its first lead since 12:31 left in the first half.
Kouzan proceeded to block two shot attempts by the Blue Devils' Jaimie Warren and Macauley, but Fredonia picked up three straight offensive rebounds and attacked again to draw the foul that set up the winning free throws.
Potsdam had trailed 45-33 at halftime, but the Bears got right back into it by outscoring the Blue Devils 15-4 to open the second half to cut it to 49-48 with 17:01 left. Kouzan connected on a couple of 3-pointers, Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y. / Williamsville East) added four points, Chenice Russell (Moira, N.Y. / Moira-Brushton) scored three points and Carli Reynolds (Indian Lake, N.Y. / Indian Lake) had a layup during the run.
Fredonia (15-9, 10-8 SUNYAC) got the lead back up to nine points on two occasions and led by that amount as late as with 4:35 remaining in the game on a Warren layup.
But, Potsdam (6-19, 4-14 SUNYAC) responded with a Kouzan 3-pointer, and a pair of Russell layups to cut the lead back to two points with 3:39 left.
Becky Hebert had a game-high 24 points including 12-of-12 from the line to go along with six rebounds and five assists to lead Fredonia. Brittany LaForce had 19 points and Warren added 15.
Kouzan led the Bears with 22 points to finish with 1,043 career points, good for fifth all-time in Potsdam women's basketball history. She also had eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks.
Weigel had 12 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Reynolds had 12 points while Russell had 10 points and four assists.
