AUSTIN, TX (02.20.14) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team shot better than 70 percent in the first half as the Comets earned an 81-69 win over Concordia Texas in American Southwest Conference play.
The Comets (now 19-5, 16-5 ASC) were 15-of-21 from the field before the break en route to an 18-point halftime lead, only to have to hold off the home Tornados over the final minutes. Morgan Kilgore and Ciara Guilhas each finished with 19 points while Amber Brown added 10 points as UTD has now set up a regular-season finale at Mary Hardin-Baylor, where the winning team will earn the No. 2 seed at next weekend's ASC Tournament. Game time in Belton is 1 p.m.
After a back-and-forth start to the game, the Comets took the lead for good, 11-10, on a jumper by Kilgore with 10:18 left in the opening half. Kilgore's jumper started a 6-0 run for UTD which sparked a 19-8 stretch before the Comets grabbed their first double-digit lead, 28-18, with 4:20 left before the break. UTD took a 44-26 lead into the locker room after shooting 71.4% from the field in the half.
The Comets extended their lead to as many as 25 points in the second half, grabbing a 63-38 lead with 13:42 remaining before Concordia began its comeback attempt. The Tornados then used a 20-4 run over the next nine minutes to climb within single digits, 67-58, with just under five minutes to play. However, that would as close as CTX would get before the Comets closed out their 19th win of the season, one victory shy of their fifth 20-win season over the past six years.
UTD ended the night 26-of-46 from the field for a season-high 56.5 percent. The Comets were 6-of-11 (54.5%) from three-point range and hit 23-of-25 (92%) free throws.
