Trinity Women's Basketball Handles Connecticut College

Hartford, Conn. – Senior forward Hannah Brickley (Melrose, Mass.) put up game-highs of 21 points and 12 boards to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 58-48 victory over the visiting Connecticut College Camels in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's basketball action this afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium.  Trinity improves to 13-8 overall and 6-3 in the NESCAC with its third win in a row, while the Camels fall to 12-10 overall and 4-4 in the league with their third loss in a row.

Connecticut College got off to a solid start, taking a 17-12 lead at the 12:16 mark of the first half after a back-to-back drives by rookie guard Liz Malman (Mendham, N.J.) and sophomore forward Willa McKinley (Westport, N.Y.).  Trinity responded with a 10-2 run, ignited by a long three-pointer from the right wing by senior Abby Hancock (Casco, Maine), and led, 22-19, with just under five minutes left before the break.  Sophomore center Jenna Lovett (Tolland, Conn.) scored for the Camels on layup with under two minutes on the clock to give her team a 27-26 lead, but Brickley scored the last three points of the half on a jumper and a free throw to put Trinity ahead, 29-27, at intermission.  Brickley led all scorers at halftime with nine points.

Trailing, 31-29, in the opening minutes of the second half after a drive by Connecticut College junior guard Carlee Smith (Willimantic, Conn.), Trinity used a 13-2 spurt including six point by Brickley to go ahead, 42-33, with 13:13 left to play.  Another Brickley layup put the Bantams ahead by double digits for the first time at 46-35 with 8:53 on the clock, and Trinity led, 54-40, at the 3:39 mark after a left-handed drive by senior guard Moriah Sweeney (Ramsey, N.J.).  Connecticut College closed to 54-47 with two minutes remaining on seven unanswered points including five by Malman, but a traditional three-point play by Trinity senior forward Shantel Hanniford (Nantucket, Mass.) pushed the lead back up to ten.

Sweeney and Hanniford joined Brickley in double figures in scoring for Trinity with 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Sweeney also grabbed six rebounds and Hanniford totaled eight boards, four assists, and three steals.  Malman paced the Camels with 15 points, while Smith scored 12 points to go with four rebounds and four assists, and senior forward Tara Gabelman (Irvington, N.Y.) contributed eight points and a team-high 11 boards.
