Toms storm into share of MIAC lead

Maggie Weiers had 18 points and nine rebounds and Taylor Young had a double double with 13 points and 11 boards as No. 16-ranked Tommies moved into a first-place tie with a 17-point home victory over MIAC leader St. Mary's.

The teams are tied for first place, one game ahead of Concordia-Moorhead, with four MIAC games to go.

The Toms (18-3 overall, 16-2 MIAC) used 25-5 first-half run to build a 25-9 lead and stayed in control. Katie Stone added 13 points and Elaine Warner added eight points and eight rebounds off the bench.

The Cards (19-2, 16-2), who had a 16-game winning streak halted, missed 21 of their first 23 shots and finished at 28 percent from the floor.

SMU's Bridget Pethke had 16 points and Darcey Rice added 11 points. The Cardinals made 16 of 17 free throws on the day to hang around. They trimmed a 21-point deficit to 13 points with 4:20 to play but couldn't get closer.
