Warhawk Women Remain Unbeaten in WIAC with 86-73 Win over Superior

The first half was a see-saw battle between the Warhawks and Yellowjackets with eight ties and four lead changes. The largest lead in the first 20 minutes was six points, held by UW-W after a free throw by Mary Merg made it 31-25 with 6:39 remaining. Superior scored the next 10 straight to regain the lead, 35-31 with 5:13 left in the half. The Warhawks ended the half on a 9-3 run to head into the locker rooms with a 40-38 advantage. Whitewater would not trail the rest of the way. 

UW-S shot 52% (16-31) from the field in the first half compared to Whitewater's 40% (15-38). The difference came from the free throw line where the Warhawks hit 7-13 and Superior was 3-4. UW-W held a 26-16 advantage on the boards in the first half.

Abbie Reeves jumpstarted the Warhawk offense with a three pointer just nine seconds into the second half to push the lead out to five, 43-38. The Yellowjackets fought back to within one but that's as close as they would come. Whitewater gradually extended their lead, hitting double figures at the 7:03 mark after a Kaitlyn Thill layup made the score 71-61. Two Thill free throws with just under one minute remaining provided the largest lead of the game for UW-W, 14, 82-68. Reilly Stewart capped the scoring with two makes from the charity stripe with 18 seconds left on the clock to give the Warhawks the 86-73 victory. 

The Whitewater defense made it more difficult for the Yellowjackets to score in the second half, allowing UW-S to shoot 38% from the field. UW-W increased their shooting efficiency to 50% from the floor in the second 20 minutes. Once again, it was the free throw line that provided the difference with the Warhawks' 16-24 compared to the Yellowjackets' 4-6 from the charity stripe. For the game, Whitewater was 23-37 from the free throw line. Superior was just 7-10. 

Amy Mandrell led all players with 25 points on 10-13 from the field and 5-8 from the line adding nine boards, five off the offensive glass. Thill ended with 17 points adding nine rebounds and a game high five assists. Katie Burton posted 13 points including 3-4 from long range. Reeves rounded out the double digit scorers for UW-W with 12 points adding four assists and three steals. Kristen Ruchti led all players on the glass with 10 rebounds including six offensive boards.

Sally Linzmeier led the Yellowjackets with 23 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Brynn Liljander and Allyssa Lindberg each had 10 points for Superior.

The Warhawks head to La Crosse Wednesday, February 12 to take on the Eagles at 7:00.
