Pirates have huge night to defeat Centenary

SHREVEPORT, La. – Southwestern steadily increased their lead throughout the game and posted an 88-50 final over Centenary College on Saturday night.

Less than six minutes into the first half Southwestern already led by double-digits 15-5 and hit the 20 point mark with 9:38 to play in the first on Annie Bourne's jumper. A pair of free throws from Jordan Owens with 4:54 on the clock put SU up by 30 and the Pirates led by 31, 48-17, at halftime.

Southwestern continued their dominant play in the second half and neared the 40 point advantage as Chelsea Leeder's three put the Pirates up 38, 73-35. Lashelle Williams' layup with 6:02 to play broke the 40-point lead barrier, 80-39.

The Pirates just continued to get stronger as they went deeper into their bench until they arrived at the 88-50 final.

Southwestern shot 52.9% from the field and 38.9% from three point range while holding Centenary to 25.8% from the floor and 12.5% from long range.

Owens and Leeder led with 17 points while Annie Bourne once again posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Valerie Logan was outstanding at the point position with a season high 11 assists, setting a new SU record.

Southwestern improves to 13-10 on the year and 9-3 in the SCAC with the win, moving into third place in the conference while Centenary remains winless at 0-19 overall and 0-10 in the SCAC.

SU heads to Schreiner on Friday to continue the second half of conference play. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
