Herons handle Raptors 62-52

GENEVA, N.Y.—The trio of Chloe HayterErin O'Brien, and Melanie Patterson combined for 53 points tonight, leading William Smith College to a 62-52 Liberty League win over Bard College in Bristol Gym. The Herons improved to 16-5 overall and 9-3 in the league while the Raptors fall to 1-17, 0-9.
 
Hayter was 8-of-15 from the floor and 7-for-7 from the line for a game-high 23 points. O'Brien had three 3-pointers on her way to 15 points. Patterson also finished with 15 points. William Smith shot 49 percent from the floor for the game and 42 percent from 3-point land. Led by Jacqueline Murphy's team-high nine rebounds, the Herons enjoyed a 33-23 edge on the glass.
 
Bard got 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds from Tytravia Riley and 14 points from Bianka Bell. The Raptors shot 43 percent for the game, but struggled from deep, making just 1-of-13.
 
In the first half, Bard jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but William Smith stormed into the lead for good with 14 straight points. Junior forward Chloe Hayter netted six of her 15 first half points during the run. The Herons carried a 31-22 lead into halftime, shooting 50 percent from the floor, including 3-of-5 from beyond the 3-point arc. They made twice as many free throws (6) as the Raptors attempted (3), and had a 16-10 advantage on the glass, but were slowed by 11 turnovers.
 
Early in the second half, Bard scored back-to-back baskets to shrink a 10-point Heron lead to six on Liz Freud's jumper at the 15:15 mark. William Smith restored its double digit lead in short order thanks to Erin O'Brien's 3-pointer just over a minute later. The Herons ran their lead out to as many 19 before the Raptors made a late push against the William Smith reserves.
 
William Smith will be back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, when the Herons host league leader, Vassar (16-3, 9-1). Bard also plays tomorrow, visiting RIT at 2 p.m.
