Boxers Shoot Their Way To Convincing Win Over Bearcats

FOREST GROVE – Abby Jones (Jr., Haines, Alaska) paced a balanced scoring performance for Pacific Tuesday night, leading the Boxers to a convincing 78-56 victory over Willamette in Northwest Conference women's basketball action at the Stoller Center.
 
Jones came off the bench to score 13 points, going a perfect 5 for 5 from the field and 3 of 3 from the free throw line to go along with seven rebounds.   She led three Pacific players to score in double figures as the Boxers shot 48.3 percent from the field (28-58), went 8 of 20 from three-point range and 14 of 18 from the free throw line.
 
Sarah Curl (Fr., Portland, Ore.) added 11 points while Olivia Cook (Jr., Juneau, Alaska) added 10 points and seven rebounds.  Pacific also outrebounded the Bearcats 40-30, forced 15 Willamette turnovers and outscored the Bearcats' bench 44-0.
 
Jojo DeLong provided most of Willamette's offense, scoring 27 points on 10 of 17 from the field and 4 of 10 from three-point range.  Katie Kalugin added 15 points as the Bearcats shot 38.9 percent from the field (21-54) and 10 of 14 from the free throw line.
 
With the win, Pacific improved to 6-13 overall, 2-9 NWC.  Willamettte dropped to 3-17, 1-10 NWC.
 
Pacific wasted little time setting the pace, opening up a 15-5 lead on Alex Pfefferle's (Sr., Twin Falls, Idaho) three-pointer five minutes into the contest.  Willamette came back to within four points, 17-13, on Kalugin's lay-in with 12 minutes to go. 
 
The Boxers took control back, though, outscoring the Bearcats 22-12 through the rest of the period.  A pair of Kaila Johnson (Jr., McKinleyville, Calif.) free throws with 6:23 to go put Pacific back up 28-17 while Cook's bucket with 2:21 left gave them a 35-21 advantage.  The 14-point lead held as the Boxers went into halftime up 39-25.
 
Cook opened the second half with two free throws that the put the Boxers up 16 points, but the Bearcats scored on each of their next two possessions to come back within 11 points, 41-30.  The lead was 13 points with 14:21 to go when Allie Wipf (Jr., Fortuna, Calif.) sparked a 7-0 run that put the Boxers 56-36 with 12:21 left.  Three minutes later, Abby Talboy's (So., Boise, Idaho) three-pointer gave Pacific a 21-point advantage, 59-38.
 
Willamette would not come closer than 16 points the rest of the way while the Boxers built their largest lead of 22 points on Jonica Durbin's (Jr., Seaback, Wash.) short range shot with 2:25 to go.
