Spartans Drop Rivalry Game

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team dropped the first of two rivalry games against crosstown foe Loras College (11-6, 6-0). The Spartans 72-64 road loss on Saturday afternoon was their second straight loss. Down 11 at halftime, UD outscored the Duhawks 38-35 in the second half. Jenna Kotas (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) was the leading scorer for UD with 19 points. Dubuque is now 11-6 overall and sits in third place in the Iowa Conference at 4-2. 

Despite playing at Loras, Spartan Nation turned out in full force helping UD battle back time and time again. The biggest comeback from the Spartans came midway through the second half when Loras opened up a 20 point lead at 55-35 with 12:09. UD answered with a 15-2 run over the next eight minutes to get within seven points at 57-50. It was a total team effect during the run with Kotas and Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowh) scoring four points. Stephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) scored three points and pulled down three rebounds during the run while Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) and Adrianna Stephens (Madison, Wis./LaFollette) scored two points.

‌‌Goetz and Schmidt each joined Kotas in double figured for the game with Goetz finishing with 15 points (5-5 from the free throw line), seven rebounds (three-offensive/four-defensive), and three assists. Schmidt scored 10 points (6-8 from the free throw line), grabbed six rebounds (three-offensive/three-defensive), and had three steals.

The Spartans bench finished with a 22-14 advantage in points with Stephens scoring seven points. The down fall for UD was their shooting from beyond the arc, shooting 1-9 in the first half and 1-11 in the second half. 

UD went on a 10-0 run late in the first half beginning with a steal by Daneshia Snitker (Waukon, Iowa/Waukon) which led to two Goetz free throws at the 5:54 mark. Goetz capped the run with a layup and two more free throws with 3:51 left in the first half for six of the Spartans ten points in the run.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will put its nine game home winning streak against conference opponents to the test against Simpson College (10-7, 5-1) on Wednesday, January 29th.
