Yeowomen Give No. 1 DePauw a Scare

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College Yeowomen had No. 1 ranked DePauw and it's 53 game winning streak on the ropes Saturday afternoon, but were unable to deliver the knockout punch, succumbing to the Tigers, 67-62.

Christina Marquette nailed a three-pointer with 53 seconds left to cut the Tigers' lead to three at 63-60. Oberlin was then called for a foul on the subsequent possession, which gave DePauw a fresh shot clock.

On that possession Savannah Trees hit a jumper with 17 seconds left to extend DePauw's lead out to five. Oberlin then tried a long a 3-pointer that was off the mark and a quick foul by the Yeowomen sent DePauw to the line for two more chairty tosses, which effectively ended the game.

Marquette scored exactly half of the Yeowomen's points, dropping in 31 points on 12-of-19 shooting, including 5-of-6 from three-point range. The junior also pulled in 10 boards for her 12th double-double of the season and third in a row.

The game was only tied once, at 2-2, and the Yeowomen never led as the visitors jumped out to a 21-10 lead courtesy of a 9-0 scoring run. Despite Oberlin shooting 50 percent from the floor in the first half, the Tigers took a 39-26 lead into halftime due to nine offensive rebounds and subsequently taking 10 more shots than the Yeowomen.

DePauw's lead would grow to as much as 15 in the second half, but back-to-back triple hits from Marquette and Bernhardt cut the lead to five with just under 10 minutes to play.

Another pair of threes from Bernhardt and Marquette capped off a 7-0 Oberlin run to make the score 61-57 with two minutes left to play.

Bernhardt scored 12 points to join Marquette in double figures, as the sophomore shot 5-of-8 from the field. Lillian Jahan chipped in eight points, four rebounds, two steals, and two assists.

The Yeowomen shot 58.5 percent from the field in the second frame to finish the game shooting 54.2 percent, compared to DePauw's 46.7 mark. Both teams shot well from deep as DePauw was 7-of-14 and Oberlin was 7-for-16.

The Tigers remain perfect at 20-0 overall, 11-0 in conference play while the Yeowomen fall to 8-12, 3-8 in the NCAC.

Oberlin will return to Philips Gym on Wednesday night as the Big Red of Denison University comes to town for a 6 p.m. game.
