PLATTSBURGH, NY – The SUNY Plattsburgh women's basketball team connected on 62.5 percent of its first half field goals and exploded for 52 points at intermission en route to an 84-53 victory over the State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals broke out of the gates with a flourish, connecting on 20-of-32 field goal attempts and 5-for-12 from three-point distance in sweeping the season series from the Hawks. Plattsburgh used an early 17-4 run to snap away from a 3-3 tie and into a 20-7 lead. Junior guard Brittany Marshall and senior guard Kathleen Payne tallied 12 and 11 points respectively for the Cardinals in the first half.
The loss drops New Paltz to 4-15, 2-10 in the SUNYAC. Plattsburgh, which sits in second place in SUNYAC standings, improves to 14-4, 9-2. The Hawks next head to SUNY Cortland for a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Plattsburgh travels to The College at Brockport next Friday, Feb. 7 for a 6 p.m. game.
Behind the play of freshman forward Kit Small (Slingerlands, NY/Academy of the Holy Name), who scored 14 points in the first half and 23 in the game, the Hawks were down 31-21 with 8:02 remaining, but the Cardinals went on a 21-12 run (with five different players scoring) to close out the first 20 minutes ahead 52-31.
The Cardinals cooled off to 29 percent field goal shooting in the second half, but the New Paltz offense couldn't muster enough offense to cut into the lead and the Plattsburgh margin never dipped below 20 points.
Small was the offensive firepower for the Hawks, tallying 23 points, one off her career-high, and registered double figures for the seventh straight game. Freshman forward Courtney Irby (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) had 11 rebounds, her seventh double-figures rebounding game of the season.
Payne led Plattsburgh with 17 points. Marshall chipped in with 12 points and sophomore forward Devona Paul had 11 points.
