HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's basketball team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end as the Fords fell to visiting Johns Hopkins University, 44-40, in Centennial Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Gooding Arena.
The defeat was Haverford's first home loss of the season as the Fords (16-2, 10-2 CC) entered the contest with a 7-0 record at Gooding Arena in the 2013-14 campaign.
The matchup between the top team teams in the conference came down to the wire as Haverford looked to even the season series with the Blue Jays (13-6, 11-3).
Fatu Conteh's jumper at 6:18 gave the visitors their largest lead of the contest at 39-34 but the Fords fought back. Rachel Baskin's drive down the left side of the lane brought Haverford within three at 39-36 with a little over four minutes remaining on the clock.
Junior Shannon Smith's third block of the day was a big one as she rejected Alyssa Fleming's layup attempt at the 2:27 mark. The Fords' defensive stand energized the home crowd and Haverford took advantage of the opportunity as Baskin converted another tough drive to pull the Fords within one, 39-38, with the clock showing 2:15.
Haverford's defense made two consecutive stops and the Fords had a chance to take the lead but Cara Wyant's three-pointer from the top was just off the mark with 52 seconds to go in the game.
Once again Haverford stood tall on the defensive end as the Fords forced Conteh into a tough shot on the Blue Jays' next possession. Sophomore Katie Clark was fouled however, as she managed to come up with the ball during a battle for the rebound.
Clark hit one foul shot to push the Johns Hopkins' advantage to two and the Blue Jays then went 4-for-4 from the line in the final 16 seconds to claim the victory.
Playing their first game at Gooding Arena in 10 days, the Fords jumped out to a 7-0 advantage in the contest as they looked to keep their perfect home record on the season intact.
Nina Voith's three-pointer from the top of the arc at the seven-minute mark of the first half gave the senior 10 of Haverford's first 20 points on the day. The Fords never trailed during the opening stanza and Jacquelyne Pizzuto's layup in the waning seconds of the first half gave the hosts a seven-point lead (29-22) at the break.
Voith finished with a game-high 12 points to go along with a team-high six rebounds. Junior Elizabeth Lynch also reached double figures with 11 points including two three-pointers.
Baskin added eight points and three of Haverford's eight steals on the afternoon.
Junior Ciara McCullagh led Johns Hopkins with 11 points and nine rebounds while Fleming chipped in with 10 points.
The Fords play the second of three consecutive home Centennial contests on Wednesday as they look to sweep the season series against Muhlenberg College (12-7, 9-4) at 6 p.m. Haverford registered an 87-80 road victory in Allentown, Pa., on November 26.
