Rochester, N.Y., Jan. 31, 2014 – Junior forward Melissa Gilkey scored a game-high 22 points and became the 13th player in school history to join the 1,000-point club as the No. 2-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team posted a 65-58 road win at the University of Rochester Friday night in Rochester, N.Y.

Gilkey achieved the feat with 12:24 to play with a driving left-handed lay-up, which was part of a 9-0 run for Washington U. She has scored 1,006 points in 72 career games for the Bears, for an average of 14.0 per contest.

Washington U. improved its overall record to 16-1, 6-0 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Rochester fell to 7-10, 1-5 in the UAA. The Bears extended their lead in the UAA standings to two games following Carnegie Mellon University's 71-68 win at home against New York University.

Junior guard Alyssa Johanson added 13 points and tied a career-high with six rebounds off the bench for Washington U, which extended its season-long winning streak to 12 games. The Bears shot 40.4 percent from the field in the win and outrebounded Rochester, 38-33.

Washington U. started slow hitting just two of its first eight shots from the field but trailed by only two points (9-7). Senior Lucy Montgomery provided a punch off the bench canning a three from the wing to give WUSTL the 12-10 lead.

The Bears trailed by two (16-14) when Washington U. responded with a 16-3 run to take its largest lead of the game at 30-19 with 4:30 to play. Johanson ignited the run with a three-point play after a put-back and a foul, while Gilkey had six of the final eight points for the Bears. Rochester went 5:24 without a bucket at one point before a three by Sarah Kaminsky.

Rochester stayed in the contest behind its three-point shooting, hitting 6-of-13 in the opening half. The Yellowjackets entered the game averaging 4.9 made per game. A bank three from the wing by Ally Zywicki trimmed the lead to 32-28, but a bucket by Johanson and a three by Gilkey made it 37-30 with 1:17 to play.

The Yellowjackets ended the half on a 7-0 run, including a three-pointer by Danielle McNabb at the buzzer to tie the score at 37-37. Gilkey led all scorers with 15 points and six boards, while Kelsey Hurley had 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting for Rochester. The Bears shot 48.1 percent (13-27) from the field in the opening half.

Washington U. started slow for the second-straight half hitting just two of its first nine shots from the field and trailed 46-41 after a driving lay-up by Kaminsky with 13:14 to play. Head coach Nancy Fahey called her second timeout of the half and the Bears responded with a 9-0 run to take the 50-46 lead.

The Bears held onto a one-point lead (54-53) when Johanson scored on a driving lay-up with 5:05 to play to get the lead back to three. Rochester got advantage down to one, but Montgomery found junior Maddy Scheppers wide open for a lay-up with 1:45 to make it 58-55. Gilkey sealed the victory for Washington U. with a pair of free-throws with 57.4 seconds left to make it 60-55.

Hurley (15), McNabb (15) and Zywicki (11) all scored in double figures for Rochester, which dropped its fourth-straight game. Loren Wagner, the leading rebounder in the UAA, had seven points and 11 rebounds in the loss.

Washington U. closes its four-game road trip at No. 16 Emory University Sunday, Feb. 2. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. (ET) in Atlanta, Ga.
