BUFFALO, NY— Bianca Smiley (Amherst/Sweet Home) scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help Buffalo State (14-3/9-1) avenge its only SUNYAC loss of the season and defeat visiting Fredonia (9-7/4-6), 71-58, tonight at the Sports Arena.
Mariah Norris (Endicott/Union-Endicott) and Staci McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) joined Smiley in double-figures for the Bengals. Norris netted 15 points, while McElroy had 11 points and seven rebounds. Ashley Wallace (Lockport/Starpoint) chipped in nine points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
Freshman guard Alexis Cheatham (Lockport/Lockport) paced Fredonia with 24 points, while SUNYAC leading scorer Becky Hebert (Hilton/Hilton) was held to 14 points.
Buffalo State jumped out to an early 16-6 lead. Fredonia battled back and led briefly, but the Bengals scored the final seven points of the first half to take a 32-25 lead into the break. Buffalo State never trailed in the second half and late 10-0 run to push the advantage to 20 before coasting to the win.
Buffalo State outran the Blue Devils, owning an 18-0 advantage in fast break points. The Bengals also dominated the glass, outrebounding Fredonia, 51-35, and outscoring the Blue Devils in the paint, 40-26.
Buffalo State will next host Oswego this Friday at 6 p.m.
