NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – While the final score seemingly depicts a comfortable 59-44 win for The College at Brockport over the State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, the 15-point victory was never assured, as a scrappy Hawk team hung tough throughout the contest.

It wasn't until the final 2:33 of the contest that the visitors could feel comfortable with a 53-43 lead. Until that point, the Hawks were within striking distance. With 11:21 to play, freshman forward Courtney Irby (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) made two free throws to bring New Paltz within 36-30, and after junior guard Shannan Walkerhit a three-pointer with 7:39 remaining, the Hawks were only down 42-35. The Golden Eagles had answers at every juncture, though, and went on a mini 9-4 run over the next 4:14, getting four straight free throws from freshman guard Faith Welch and a layup from senior forward Hannaee Fordyce to finally create some separation, 51-39, with 3:25 to play.

The loss leaves New Paltz at 3-14, 1-9 in the SUNYAC. The Golden Eagles improve to 8-7, 4-4. New Paltz next travels to SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Plattsburgh for SUNYAC games on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at 6 p.m. and 2 p.m. respectively. Brockport next hosts SUNY Cortland on Jan. 28 at 6 pm.

New Paltz led only twice, 8-4 and 12-10, but Brockport needed a strong rebounding effort to keep the Hawks at bay. The Golden Eagles outrebounded the Hawks 59-27, with 33 of those boards coming in the first half. Despite that commanding edge and a 5-for-10 effort from long range, Brockport only held a 28-20 halftime lead, largely because the Hawks forced 17 first half turnovers, committed only seven, and got another strong effort from sophomore guards Goldie Harrison (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) and Christine Rivera (Long Beach, N.Y./Valley Stream), who had seven and six points respectively.

Brockport got necessary first half breathing room thanks to a 13-2 run to pull ahead 23-14 with 3:13 until intermission. A Welch three-pointer started the run. The spurt was concluded by another three-pointer, this one coming from senior guard Alexandra Marshall.

The Hawks wouldn't go away, particularly in the second half, and at the 12:05 mark had drawn within 34-28 following an inside layup from freshman forward Kit Small (Slingerlands, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Name). Each New Paltz attempt to close in was met with Brockport resistance, though, and while the Hawks kept clawing; the lead was firm enough to withstand the New Paltz attack. Six of Brockport's final eight points came off free throws in the final 2:47 of play.

Small led New Paltz in scoring with 13 points, her fifth straight game in double figures. She also led the Hawks with nine rebounds. Welch had 16 points for Brockport; Marshall chipping in 13 points and Hammersley with 11 points. Sophomore guard Erin Cunningham led all rebounders with 11.
