LeTourneau Dominates Inside En Route to 80-63 Road Win Over Sul Ross State

The LeTourneau University women's basketball team posted an 80-63 win over host Sul Ross State on Thursday night in Alpine, Texas.

The YellowJackets (6-7, 4-6 ASC) landed four players in double figures including senior Julencia Curtis (pictured), who nearly had a double double, with 18 points and nine rebounds to lead LeTourneau. Sophomore Ashley Stephens added 12 points and eight rebounds; plus freshman Ashley Crockett and senior Jessica Manas scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.  

The Lobos (1-13, 0-11 ASC) were led by Asrelle Anderson and Falisha Villanueva, who scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.

LeTourneau quickly overcame an early nine-point deficit to tie the game on three occasions and closing out the half with an 8-1 spurt for a 37-30 lead. In the spurt, four-different YellowJackets contributed to the spurt. The Lobos quickly cut the deficit to one, 37-36, on back-to-back three pointers to start the second half.

YellowJackets head coach Corey Thomaston said, "Tonight was a great test of our ability to focus through adversity. Sul Ross State really came after us hard."  

However, the YellowJackets failed to concede the lead and blew the game open with a 23-4 run to end the contest. In the run, five of the baskets came on layups for LeTourneau.  

"I was very pleased with the way we responded and finished the game tonight. We got a very strong effort on the interior tonight and took advantage of the mismatch we had." In the win, the YellowJackets outscored Sul Ross State by a 52-14 advantage on points in the paint and outrebounded the Lobos, 59-36. Also, in the victory, LeTourneau shot a season-best 47.6% (30-for-63) from the field.

LeTourneau will continue its road trip with a trip to Brownwood on Saturday with a 1 p.m. tilt against Howard Payne University. Host HPU will come into the matchup with an 8-6 overall record and 7-4 ASC after defeating East Texas Baptist on Thursday, 68-59.
