RICHARDSON, TX (01.23.14) - Junior guard Jo'Anna Davis drained seven three-pointers for a career-high 23 points as the UT Dallas women's basketball team sailed to an 80-47 win over Ozarks Thursday in American Southwest Conference play, moving the Comets to within one-half game of league-leading UT-Tyler.
Thursday's scoring outburst was the fifth straight double-figure game for Davis, who came off the bench to spark UTD's second win in six days over the Lady Eagles. The win kicked off a stretch of five home games for the Comets over a span of 10 days for UTD, including important rematches with UT Tyler and Hardin-Simmons this weekend.
The Comets placed three players in double digits against Ozarks as Christina Brosnahan had 12 points and Morgan Kilgore finished with 10 points. UTD shot just 38.6 percent from the field, but connected on 12-of-24 three-pointers and were 14-of-16 from the foul line to record its largest margin of victory this season.
The Comets actually won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding Ozarks, 46-44, despite a Lady Eagle roster that included several players over six-feet tall. Guard Madi Hess led the way for UTD with eight rebounds while Morgan Kilgore grabbed seven. UTD held Ozarks to just 29.5 percent shooting (18-of-61), and gave up just two three-pointers.
A free throw from Sharmeke Shaw gave UTD a 23-point lead (41-18) lead at the break, a lead they held through much of the first 10 minutes of the second half. After an Amber Brown layup and foul at the 10:41 mark that made it 59-35, UTD then went on another run to stretch the lead to 32 points (72-40) with 3:47 remaining. Another layup and free throw from Madison Steele earned free chicken coupons for the Green Out crowd and a 75-42 lead with 1:33 left.
Kalyn Peters' three-pointer with :21 remaining - the 12th of the game for the Comets - put the margin at 35 points (80-45), the largest of the game.
UTD has a chance Saturday to overtake UT Tyler for the conference lead when the Comets host the Patriots for a 1 pm contest. UTD then hosts Hardin-Simmons Monday night.
