NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – In a game that featured 10 ties and seven lead changes, it was the State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team that secured the lead that mattered most, going on an 8-0 run in a 1:32 span late in the game to register a 68-62 victory over SUNY Oswego in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Tuesday night at the Hawk Center.

The victory, which snapped an eight-game losing streak, came down to a swarming Hawk defense, especially on two critical Oswego's offensive possessions with 29 and 13 seconds remaining in the game respectively, and a career-high 18 points from junior guard Shannan Walker (Vestal N.Y./Vestal), who came off the bench to produce her best game offensive game of the season.

The victory sends the Hawks into this weekend's home SUNYAC contests against SUNY Geneseo and The College at Brockport with a 3-12, 1-7 record. Oswego, which had defeated New Paltz 71-51 just a week ago, falls to 6-10, 2-7. New Paltz next hosts Geneseo on Friday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. Oswego will next face Geneseo on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m.

In the final 30 seconds of the game, the Hawks clamped down on a big Oswego three-point attempt by senior guard Jenn Robbins with 29 seconds remaining and forced a Laker turnover with 16 ticks left to secure their first SUNYAC win of the season. A critical difference in the two games surrounded the following: A Hawk defense that allowed the Lakers to shoot 61 percent in the first half of the first meeting, but just 28 percent this evening. That was coupled with forcing 26 Oswego turnovers that led to 27 New Paltz points.

The game was tied three times in the final 7:15 of the contest, the last at 57-57 with four minutes remaining.

Oswego's last effort for a victory was a good one, a three-pointer from sophomore guard Taylor Sorell that gave the visitors a 60-59 lead with 1:44 to play. But the Hawks took the lead for good when freshman forward Kit Small(Slingerlands, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Name) connected on a slashing layup for a 61-60 lead with 1:22 remaining. New Paltz finished the game on an 8-0 run capped by two free throws from Small and a couple of clutch free throws from sophomore guard Goldie Harrison (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont) to push the New Paltz lead to 67-60 with 12 seconds remaining.

The flow over the final 7:15 was back-and-forth: Walker drained a jumper from the right wing to tie the contest at 52-52; Oswego countered with a 55-52 lead off a three-pointer from senior guard Lauren Nunziato. The Lakers got two free throws from Nunziato to trickle ahead 57-55 with 4:34 to play, but the Hawks tied the game for the last time at 57-57 off a layup from freshman forward Courtney Irby (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale).

New Paltz started the game slowly, falling behind 14-5 after Oswego senior forward Paula Egelston converted in the paint at the 14:06 mark of the first half. But the Hawks would go on a 10-1 tear to knot the contest 15-15, anchored by Walker's outside shooting and strong inside play.  New Paltz tallied 14 of its 30 first half points in the paint.  In a first half that was tied three times, New Paltz nudged ahead in the final two minutes off a Walker three-pointer, a power inside layup from senior forward Jeanette Scott (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) and a swooping layup from Harrison for a 30-24 halftime lead.

Walker earned her career-high 18 points, surpassing her previous high of 16 set against Buffalo State last year, on 6-for-10 from the field and 3-for-6 from long distance. Small continued her productive offense with 17 points on a 6-for-11 evening. Harrison finished with 14 points, six of which came off free throws. Irby grabbed 10 rebounds.

Oswego got a game-high 18 points from Robbins and 15 from sophomore forward Heather Hebert. Egelston grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, but fouled out with 1:50 remaining in the contest.
