PURCHASE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team dropped its third straight game Monday evening in Skyline Conference road action by the final count of 82-74 to the Purchase Panthers. Old Westbury (4-12) saw its conference record drop to 2-3 while Purchase's (6-6) improved to 2-3.
Old Westbury was unable to score first when Clarissa Gallagher missed a layup six seconds into play, which allowed Purchase to grab hold of the game early on with a Jess Lindsay three-point play at 19:41 to lead for good. Lindsay scored seven of Purchase's first nine points to go up 9-0 on Old Westbury before Chloe Mellon dropped in two points to put the visiting Panthers on the board. Old Westbury put together a 9-3 run to slice the 13-point deficit down to seven with 6:35 remaining before Purchase answered with a 12-3 run to go up 42-26. Old Westbury had a strong showing over the final 2:24 with a 12-2 run to take a 44-38 deficit into the half.
Raven Pentz scored five of her seven points in the opening 1:03 of the second-half to pull Old Westbury within three points of Purchase. Moments later, Purchase used a 6-0 spurt to bring its lead back up to double-digits with a 61-50 advantage at the 14:10 mark. Nikki Alexander connected on a jumper with 4:50 remaining to make it a 67-62 game before Purchase outscored Old Westbury 15-12 in the final 4:29 to earn the wire-to-wire victory.
Gallagher poured in a season-high 21 points in 26 minutes of action to pace Old Westbury. Jasmine Robinson followed with 20 points and five steals. DeAndra Scott finished with nine points and 10 rebounds, seeing her streak of double-digit scoring stop at 41 games. Scott also entered the game with five straight double-doubles. Alexander chipped in with nine points (4-5 FG) and nine rebounds off the bench.
Lindsay's 30 points (13-25 FG) and 16 rebounds led the way for Purchase. Lineker St. Hilaire and Jazmin Garcia followed with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Old Westbury finished the game shooting 36.1 percent from the field (26-72), 25 percent from three-point range (3-12) and 61.3 percent from the free-throw line (19-31) while Purchase connected on 34-of-78 from the floor (43.6%), 1-of-1 from beyond the arc and 13-of-25 from the charity stripe (52%). Purchase won the boards battle, 49-42, scoring 15 second-chance points off 17 offensive rebounds. Old Westbury committed 23 miscues, which Purchase converted into 25 points.
