LaGrange women upset No. 20 Ferrum 69-66 in overtime

FERRUM, Va. - Never giving up, LaGrange came away with a 69-66 overtime win over 20th-ranked and unbeaten Ferrum on Sunday at Schwartz Gymnasium.

The Panthers won for the fourth straight game, improving their overall record to 9-6 and evening their USA South record at 3-3. Ferrum is 10-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

"Really proud of the team today. They prepared for the game the right way and they believed in the game plan," Coach Lee Buchanan said. "We were like the fly at a picnic, we just refused to go away. A true team effort and a good win for our players."

Ferrum entered the game having won its 10 games by an average of 19 points, including a 25-point win at South Division leader Maryville. The host Panthers had won their last three games by an average of more than 29 points.

Madison Barker led the Panthers with 15 points, followed by Alex Wilson with 14 and Kelsey Mitchell with 10. Mitchell had a career-high eight assists.

The Panthers trailed 42-32 with 10:02 left in regulation. They crept within one, 50-49, on a 3-pointer from Wilson with 3:09 left.

Ferrum held on to the lead and led 54-51 heading into the final minute. Mayana LeGrande's basket made it 54-53 but two free throws by Jacole Hairston pushed the host Panthers' lead back to three, 56-53, with 18 seconds left.

The Panthers sent the game to overtime on their next possession. Wilson tied the game with her fourth trey of the afternoon with 11 seconds left. She was 4-of-6 shooting 3s in the game.

In the overtime, Caroline Brashier's 3-pointer broke a 62-62 tie with 2:12 left. It was the first lead for the Panthers since Barker's layup put them up 21-20 with 4:53 left in the first half.

Ferrum hit four straight free throws to go up 66-65. But LeGrande's jumper with 46 seconds left put the Panthers ahead to stay, 67-66.

Brashier made a steal at the defensive end with 14 seconds left. Wilson then clinched the win with two free throws with seven seconds remaining for the 69-66 final.

The win was the first in four meetings for the Panthers against Ferrum, two of the games being decided in overtime. The Panthers host Covenant in a USA South game at Mariotti Gym on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
