More news about: Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With an outside game that helped the Lycoming College women's basketball team shoot 64 percent in the first half, the inside game opened up later in the game to help lead the team to a 66-61 upset over Commonwealth Conference-leading Stevenson on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 19, at Dutch Burch Court at Lamade Gym.

The Warriors (7-7 overall, 4-4 Commonwealth) knocked off a Mustangs' squad that had just climbed into a tie for first-place in the conference with back-to-back wins against perennial powers Lebanon Valley, who beat Lycoming, 67-46, on Wednesday, and Messiah. Stevenson fell to 8-7 overall and 6-2 in the Commonwealth Conference.

The two teams battled through the first eight minutes, with four ties and five lead changes before a jumper by sophomore Victoria Siebecker (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleona) hit a jumper to make it 18-16 and start a 24-8 run that finished the half. Siebecker added a 3-pointer after her jumper and senior Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) took over on the run, scoring 10 of her 18 game-high points.

Lycoming hit 16-of-25 shots in the half and forced 10 turnovers, which led to 12 points off turnover. The Warrior guards shined in the period, hitting 3-of-6 from 3-point range and dishing out eight assists, while 24 of the team's 40 points in the half were outside the paint.

The Warriors continued to roll in the second half, leading by as many as 22 after a fastbreak bucket by sophomore Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) made it 50-28 with 15:26 remaining. Four minutes later, the Warriors still had a 21-point lead after a jumper by junior Janelle Ziminski (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) made it 54-33.

The Mustangs closed the gap in the final 11 minutes, drawing back within single-digits with 2:49 left after a fastbreak bucket by Stephanie Martinez, but they couldn't get within two possessions until there was 16 seconds left, and by then, it was too late, giving the Warriors one of their biggest wins since joining the Commonwealth Conference.

Four Warriors finished in double figures led by the second straight double-double from Antonelli, who posted 18 points 10 rebounds, five assists, four blocks and two steals. Manges notched 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Junior Ali Derr (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) posted 10 points, three rebounds and two blocks and freshman Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./KIttatinny Regional) posted 10 points and seven assists, as Lycoming shot 53 percent (27-of-51) from the field in the game.
