READING, Pa. — Kendra Beittel picked the right time to record a season high in points for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team. Having lost two of the past four games after starting 9-0, the senior guard went for 21 on the day and helped the Blue Jays post a 70-59 victory at Alvernia in Commonwealth Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Beittel had only recorded 14 points total in her past two games, but found her shooting touch for Elizabethtown (12-2, 6-2 CC). She scored ten of the Jays' first 15 points against the Crusaders (5-10, 1-7 CC).
After Beittel hit a three-pointer to make it 15-14 in favor of E-town, Alvernia's Mya Lobb got three points the hard way after being fouled in the process of making a layup and hitting the ensuing free throw to return the Crusaders to the lead at 17-15.
Emily Young and Rachel Forjan hit back-to-back jump shots and Beittel drilled another trey as the Blue Jays ran off a 9-0 run to jettison back into the lead. Taylor Kreider capped off the spurt with a layup, making it 24-17 with 8:41 remaining in the first half.
Alvernia held E-town's top two scorers, Forjan and Kreider, to a combined 5-for-23 in the first half. That's where Beittel and company picked up the slack. The Hempfield grad poured in 15 of her team-high 21 in the first 20 minutes. Taylor Alwine and Young were both 2-for-2 (four points) from the floor, and Nikki Thompson hit her only shot of the half (three-pointer).
Elizabethtown led at the half, 38-27. They grabbed 14 offensive rebounds for 11 second chance points compared to just two rebounds on the offensive end for Alvernia and zero second chance points. E-town out-rebounded the Crusaders 50-31 in the game.
Kreider found her stride in the second half, scoring nine of her 17 points on 3-of-6 shooting (3-for-5 FT). She registered the first bucket of the second half to up the lead to 40-27, but then the Jays were held scoreless over the next three minutes. The lead shrunk to seven (40-33), but Kreider ended the drought with the and-one play to push the advantage back into double digits.
Thompson grabbed an offensive board and dished to Alwine for the layup, increasing the Jays' lead to the biggest of the day up to that point at 16, 57-41, with 8:45 left. By the 5:56 mark, it had grown to 21 after Forjan's fast-break lay-in.
Alvernia made a 6-0 run of its own to cut the deficit to 15 at 5:00, but Beittel stopped any kind of Crusader momentum with her layup.
Elizabethtown put up 32 points in the paint and 22 total second chance points. They also turned 16 Alvernia turnovers into 22 points.
Beittel finished with 21 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Kreider recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. She also added four assists and three steals. Alwine was the third Blue Jay in double figures at ten points (5-for-9).
The women's basketball team returns home to Thompson Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 22, for a showdown with Stevenson. The Mustangs are currently tied atop the Commonwealth Conference standings at 6-1 with Lebanon Valley. Game-time for Wednesday is set for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
