Roanoke Stops Bridgewater, 78-64

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Roanoke stretched a five-point halftime lead to double figures in the first 10 minutes of the second half and the Maroons went on to defeat the Bridgewater College Eagles, 78-64, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Nininger Hall.

The Eagles fell behind 19-10 in the first 10 minutes of the game, but closed the gap to four points on a 3-pointer by Molly Shelley and a layup on the break by Jessica Lam. Two foul shots by Bridget Holleran and a jumper by Meghan Gadell pushed the Roanoke lead back to eight before a layup by Heather Cantrell made the score 23-17.

Roanoke led by seven, 26-19, but a 6-0 Bridgewater run cut the deficit to one. A jumper by Jessi Strom and two free throws and a layup by Cantrell pulled the Eagles to within 26-25.

The Maroons scored the next six points to go up by seven before two free throws by Strom trimmed the lead back to five. Roanoke's Cary Beahm and Bridgewater's Lam traded foul shots in the final 30 seconds as the half ended with the Maroons holding a 33-28 advantage.

The Maroons opened the second half with a 3-pointer by Holleran to lead by eight and a layup by Gwin pushed the margin to double digits at 38-28.

Two buckets by Shelley and a layup by Cassidy Burkholder cut the Roanoke lead to four, but a 3-pointer by Kelsey Smith and a layup by Laurel Hankins put the lead at nine, 43-34.

Roanoke methodically padded its lead and led by 15 points, 69-54, after a layup by Hankins with 5:30 left in the game.

The Eagles then reeled off six straight points to cut the margin back to single digits. Kelly Hughes made 1-of-2 free throws and Holly Morgan scored from the paint to make it 69-57. Shelley then hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key, making the score 69-60 with 3:02 left.

Tatum McKee and Gwin made layups for the Maroons to push the margin back to 13 points, 73-60, with 2:06 remaining and Roanoke went on the complete the 78-64 victory.

Morgan scored 14 points, all in the second half to lead four Eagles in double figures. Strom added 13 points, followed by Cantrell and Shelley with 12 points each.

Gwin led Roanoke (7-7, 3-3 in the ODAC) with 24 points and Hankins added 16.

Roanoke won the rebounding battle 49-47 with Gwin leading the Maroons with eight. Shelley and Morgan each completed double-double efforts as Shelley grabbed 12 rebounds and Morgan pulled down 10.
