Zywicki's Hits Game Winner to Cap Rochester Comeback

More news about: Rochester

Junior guard Ally Zywicki scored a layup with six seconds left as the University of Rochester rallied for a 55-53 over Case Western Reserve University on Friday night at the Palestra.

The Yellowjackets (7-6, 1-1 UAA) recovered from as many as 13 points down in the second half after a poor shooting start to stun the Spartans (7-6, 1-1 UAA).  Case had a shot to tie at the buzzer in regulation, but Jessica McCoy's shot was a touch too late and was waved off by officials to end the game.

Zywicki finished with a team high 12 points, 11 coming in the last 4:45 of the contest after she shot 0-10 from the floor in the first 25 minutes of the contest.  She also added a season high nine assists and pulled down three rebounds.  Senior center Loren Wagner recorded her seventh double-double of the season with a 10 point, 12 rebound performance while classmate Danielle McNabb finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

Case was led by junior Brooke Orcutt who had 14 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals while also making four 3-pointers.  McCoy ended with 11 points and seven boards while sophomore Laura Mummey ended with 10 points for the Spartans.

Trailing by 13 early in the second half with the score 35-22, Rochester rattled off a 10-1 over the next six minutes to pull within four with 12 minutes to go in the contest.  Freshman Sarah Kaminsky scored four of her eight points in the spurt while Wagner, McNabb and Tylar Guerrieri each added a bucket.

The Yellowjackets were then able to pull even at 40-40 after a Wagner shot from Zywicki.  Then with 6:12 remaining UR then took its first lead since the score was 5-4 just 3:16 into the game after a McNabb lay-in putting the home team up 43-42 with 4:23 left on the clock.

The Rochester lead got to as big as seven with 51 seconds on the clock, but two big treys from Orcutt and another from McCoy allowed Case to pull even at 53-53 with 14 seconds on the clock.  That set up Zywicki's tough runner in the lane lifting the Yellowjackets to victory.

UR held a slim rebounding edge at 45-42 with the Spartans committing seven more turnovers (19-12).  Rochester shot just 33.3% (21-63) from the floor but somehow managed outshoot Case for the game as the Spartans struggled in the second half, ending at 32.8% (20-61).

The Yellowjackets return to action on Sunday when they play host to Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday at 2 pm in the Palestra.
