Gettysburg Surges Past Ursinus, 57-45

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Caroline Murphy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) turned in her third consecutive double-double and classmate Cori Younghans (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) added a season-high 12 points off the bench to lead Gettysburg College to a 57-45 victory over Ursinus College in Centennial Conference women's hoops action Thursday night inside Bream Gym.
 
Gettysburg (8-5, 4-4 CC) avenged its worst loss of the season, an 18-point decision (51-33) at Ursinus (6-7, 4-4 CC) on Nov. 20. The Bullets hit a season-high 20 free throws and received 21 points from the bench in the victory.
 
The game was close early with the hosts holding the advantage for most of the opening half. The Bears climbed in front late in the period and took a 21-17 lead on a lay-up by Tori Steinberg with 1:23 before the break.
 
A three-pointer by Younghans and a pair of free throws by Murphy gave Gettysburg a 22-21 advantage heading into the locker room.
 
Ursinus came out with the first bucket of the second period to take what would turn out to be its last lead of the game at 23-22. Senior Katie Earley (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) came right back with a three-pointer to regain the lead for the Bullets.
 
Leading 29-28 with just over 12 minutes to play, Gettysburg mounted a decisive 10-2 run, kick-started by a three-pointer from the wing by Younghans. Junior Samantha Pagel(Harleysville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) capped the spurt with a lay-up off a nice feed from sophomore Emily Duggan (Marmora, N.J./Ocean City) to give the hosts a 39-30 lead with 6:41 to play.
 
Gettysburg's lead never dipped below nine the rest of the way as the squad held off the visitors by nailing eight free throws inside the final 1:15.
 
Gettysburg connected on just 32 percent (16-of-50) of its shot attempts in the game and was out-rebounded 44-38. However, the Bullets held Ursinus to 32.2 percent (19-of-59) from the floor, including just 2-of-18 (11.1 percent) from three-point land. The Bears also committed 19 turnovers.
 
Murphy finished 4-of-13 from the floor and 9-of-12 from the free throw line for 17 points. She added a dozen rebounds and three assists. Younghans knocked down a pair of three-point attempts and six free throws to double her previous season best scoring total.
 
Duggan produced a solid all-around effort for the Bullets with nine points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Senior Alyssa Isler (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) added eight points and Pagel finished with seven points.
 
Jessica Porada tallied a game-high 18 points and corralled nine rebounds for Ursinus. Devin Butchko and Caroline Shimrock each contributed seven points.
 
Gettysburg closes out the week at home against Swarthmore College on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 3 p.m.
