Riverdale, N.Y. – College of Mount Saint Vincent freshman Brittany Carroll (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored a career-high 20 points and led five Dolphins in double-figures as the Women's Basketball team posted a convincing 87-55 victory over visiting Mount Saint Mary on Wednesday evening. The win matches the team's win total from last season and stops a 23 game losing streak to the Knights dating back to the 2003-04 season.
Mount Saint Vincent never trailed and jumped out to a quick 11-0 lead in the first 3:45 of the game. The Dolphins did not allow a field goal until the 15:02 mark of the first half, the last basket the defense would allow until the 10:43 mark of the period.
The Dolphins built a 24-7 lead on a Carroll triple 9:43 into the game and held the Knights to 2-for-12 shooting over that stretch. Mount Saint Vincent went 10-for-24 over the same span and had six different players score, including eight points from Carroll.
Following a Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) lay-in at the 16:15 mark of the first half that gave the Mount an 11-0 lead, the lead never slipped below double-figures and grew to as many as 22 points twice in the opening stanza. Fraser pushed the Dolphins in front 40-18 with 1:42 left before the half and Nicole Oliver (Carmel, N.Y.) gave the Mount a 42-20 halftime advantage with six ticks left before the intermission.
The Dolphins shot an even 40-percent in the first 20 minutes, including a 6-for-14 performance from behind the arc. Christina Barone (Staten Island, N.Y.) paced the Dolphins with 12 points and Theresa Carey (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) added 10. Mount Saint Vincent outscored the Knights 11-0 in second chance scoring and 18-6 in the paint in the first half.
After Mount Saint Mary got its deficit under 20 points on a Nicole Scicutella triple just under three minutes into the second half, the Dolphins went on a 20-2 run covering 6:18 to blow the lead open to 66-29 on a Brittany Lee (Newton, N.J.) layup with 10:59 left in regulation time. The Mount went 8-for-11 from the floor in the run and 3-for-4 from long distance, led by 10 points from Carroll. Over the same span, Mount Saint Mary went 1-for-9 from the field and turned the ball over three times.
Mount Saint Vincent's lead would grow to 40 points on a Gabriella Melgar (Branford, Conn.) jumper with 8:03 to play and the Dolphins matched their largest lead of the game two more times over the final six minutes of regulation.
The Dolphins finished the game shooting 43.5-percent from the floor, their third highest percentage of the season and knocked in 10 triples, their second highest total through 10 games this season. Mount Saint Vincent dominated each facet of the game, outscoring the Knights 40-12 in the paint, 19-0 in second chance points and 18-2 on the fast break.
Carroll wrapped up her career-high scoring total 8-for-11 from the field and 4-for-6 from three-point range. She also added two steals for the Dolphins. Barone matched her career-high with 14 points on the night and was one of three Dolphins to hand out five assists in the game.
Carey chipped in with 16 points on 6-for-13 shooting, including three triples, to go along with four rebounds, five assists and a team-high three steals. Lee scored in double-figures for the second straight game with 10 points and reached double-figures in rebounds for the third straight outing with 11. She also handed out five assists for the Mount.
Registering her team leading fifth double-double of the season, Fraser rounded out the night with 14 points and a career-high 21 rebounds. She blocked four shots and handed out two of the team's 21 assists on Wednesday.
The Mount Saint Vincent defense held Mount Saint Mary to 17-for-63 shooting from the field and forced 18 turnovers. Lauren Romao paced the Knights with a team-high 19 points, while Rachel Perrone added 11.
Wednesday's win pushes Mount Saint Vincent to 7-3 overall on the season and to 2-1 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Mount is a non-conference matchup with York on Thursday night at the Peter Jay Sharp Center. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
