OSWEGO, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team ran into a hot shooting SUNY Oswego squad on Tuesday night in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action, falling to the Lakers, 75-51, at Max Ziel Gymnasium.

Oswego shot 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the floor in the first half, and despite cooling off in the final 20 minutes of play, the home team finished with a 47.5 percent (29-of-61) mark from the field. Furthermore, the Lakers shot 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from long range.

New Paltz battled Oswego early, but after sophomore guard Christine Rivera (Long Beach, N.Y./Valley Stream) tied the score at 7-all at 15:03 of the first half, the Lakers went on an explosive 21-5 spurt that lasted all of five minutes. By the time the dust settled on that run, Oswego had constructed an insurmountable 28-12 advantage. The Hawks were never able to get back in the game from that point forward, as the Lakers—who held a 20-plus point margin most of the second half—led by as many 27 points.

New Paltz drops to 2-10 overall and 0-5 in the SUNYAC. The Hawks look to get back into the win column on Friday, Jan. 17, when they face SUNY Plattsburgh at 6 p.m. at the Hawk Center. Oswego rises to 6-7 overall and 2-4 in the SUNYAC. The Lakers return to action on Friday at 6 p.m. against The College at Brockport in Brockport, N.Y.

The flow of the game varied drastically from meetings past between these two teams, as they combined for just 30 turnovers (Oswego with 17, New Paltz with 13). The Hawks shot above their season average from the floor, going 21-of-59 (35.6 percent), but a combination of Oswego's shooting and rebounding ultimately proved to be the difference in the game. The Lakers finished with a 49-36 edge on the glass.

Junior guard Shannan Walker (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and freshman forward Courtney Irby (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) each shot 50 percent from the floor to lead the Hawks in scoring, netting 12 and 10 points, respectively. Walker's line included four rebounds, four assists and one steal, while Irby totaled a career-high three blocks and three steals. Rivera came off the bench to grab a team-high seven rebounds.

Senior guard Jenn Robbins scored at will for Oswego, posting an 8-of-11 mark from the field and a 4-of-5 mark from three-point range to finish with a game-high 20 points. Senior guard Lauren Nunziato poured in 11 points to round out the Lakers' double-digit scorers. Senior forward Paula Egelston paced Oswego on the glass with a game-high nine boards.
