Hawks Suffer Loss to League Leaders

HAMBURG, N.Y. – La Roche College captured a 98-45 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory over Hilbert College today. Casie Cygan, voted the AMCC Pre-Season Player of the Year, led the RedHawks with 26 points and six steals. La Roche (5-1) sits in a first-place tie in league standings after they lost to Bradford one day earlier.

Hilbert's Natalie Whitman again did some damage in the paint. She finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds in 36 minutes. Nine other Hawks found the scoring column, but no one else netted more than 5 points.

Sabrina McLin added 17 points for La Roche, who had seven other players each score six points or more.

The Hawks were no match for La Roche who dominated statistically in points off turn-overs, points in the paint, fast break points and bench points.

Hilbert finished the game shooting 36% from the floor but were just over 50% from the foul line (13-25). Hilbert pulled down 40 rebounds, just eight fewer than La Roche, but they gave up 24 offensive rebounds to the visitors.

There were a combined 57 free throws attempted by both teams after a total of 51 fouls were called.

La Roche took command of the game early and slowly pulled away as the half progressed. The RedHawks scored 10-unanswered points in a span of four minutes to take a 41-17 lead. They coasted to a 48-24 advantage at the break. Cygan secured 19 points in 18 minutes and Whitman earned double-8's in points and rebounds.

Whitman put the Hawks' first points in the second half in the score book when she visited to the charity stripe at 15:48. By then, La Roche stretched their lead to 34 points and never looked back.

The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, January 15 when they host Pitt-Bradford at 8pm.
