The Pitt-Bradford women's basketball team could not overcome a string of turnovers throughout the game, and as a result, Franciscan defeated Pitt-Bradford 65-63 on Sunday, Jan. 12. Pitt-Bradford turned the ball over a total of 18 times throughout the game.
Senior Geena Sneeringer led the Panthers with 15 points, 11 rebounds and two assists, securing the game's only double-double. Sophomore Allison Osborne found the net for 14 points and three rebounds. Junior Alicia Kimmel finished the game with 11 points, seven rebounds and two assists, while freshman Kaserra Owens left the court with 10 points.
Pitt-Bradford (8-5, 4-2) never seemed to find the comfort zone and level of confidence it showed in the La Roche victory just 24 hours prior. The Panthers opened the contest on a quick 6-0 run before the Barons were able to react.
At that time, Franciscan found a way to create scoring opportunities and opened up a lead of its own, 14-12, with 11:38 still showing on the clock.
The Panthers found themselves down by as much as 13 points late in the first half and were looking for a response. That response never came and Pitt-Bradford headed to the locker room trailing Franciscan 36-25 at the break.
The Panthers shot 35.5 percent from the field in the first half and did not make a three-point shot on just one attempt. They were just 3-of-7 from the line.
The Barons shot 45.2 percent from the floor, including 50 percent from behind the arc. Franciscan was a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
Franciscan (4-7, 3-3) kept its foot on the gas as second-half play began, holding on to the lead they carried into halftime.
With 8:19 remaining, Pitt-Bradford found itself down by one point and in position to take the lead. As the fates had it, Franciscan used two free-throw shots to extend its lead slightly.
With 4:38 showing on the clock, Pitt-Bradford evened the score at 57 points each. A missed jumper by Franciscan's Helen Raines gave the Panthers the ball. Owens went up for a jumper but came away with no points to show for it and the Barons capitalized on the opportunity to once again take the lead.
With just 15 seconds left in regulation, Pitt-Bradford trailed by two points. Osborne was called for a foul under the basket and the Barons' Monica Dawyot went to the line and sank two clutch, free-throw attempts.
The clock expired moments later but not before Osborne drained a triple as the buzzer sounded to equal the game's final score.
"I give all the credit to Franciscan for playing a great game," said head coach Patrick Daniel. "I am disappointed that we responded today with this type of effort after what we did in last night's game. We have to learn that every ball game is important and we can't just show up and expect to win. We have to work for everything."
Pitt-Bradford finished the game shooting 40 percent from the floor, including 66.7 percent from behind the arc. The Panthers were 13-of-20 from the line.
Franciscan shot 43.1 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from the three-point line. The Barons were 16-of-18 from the line.
The Panthers return to practice in preparation for its upcoming game at Hilbert on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
