Dominating Defensive Effort Leads CNU Past Frostburg State, 82-44

More news about: Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- A suffocating defensive effort from the Christopher Newport women's basketball team ensured an unwelcome homecoming to CNU Athletics Hall of Famer Cathy Parson, now the head coach of the Frostburg State Bobcats (2-7, 1-3). The Captains forced 35 turnovers, converted 36 points off of those takeaways and blistered the CAC foe on Saturday, 82-44.

Parson, in her first year as head coach at FSU, returned to Newport News for the first time since coaching the Captains for ten seasons from 1988-89 to 1997-98. She was inducted into the CNU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001 after having led the Captains to five NCAA Tournament appearances and eight regular season conference titles.

Her squad would not have an answer for CNU's tough defense, though, as the Captains pressured the Frostburg State offense all night long. Christopher Newport held their opponent to just 23 points in the first half, on 31% shooting, but followed it up with an even more stifling second half. After halftime, Frostburg State mustered just three made field goals, shooting 11.5% from the field (3-26), and had 19 turnovers.

In the game, the Captains defense translated Bobcat turnovers into 36 points, nearly half their final score for the game. Eleven different players registered at least one steal in the game, as CNU came away with 22 as a team. Junior forward Camry Green, playing in her first game this season due to an injury, burst back onto the floor with a team-high five thefts, in just eight minutes. She added six points on 3-of-5 shooting for the Captains.

The 35 turnovers forced was the most in a game since January 13, 2010 against N.C. Wesleyan, when the Captains forced 37.

The game was truly a team effort from start to finish, as seniors Nicole Mitchell, with 16, and Tia Perry, with 14, led the offensive attack, but 14 different Captains finished on the score sheet. Sophomore Anika Trent put together one of the finest performances of her career, with nine points and six rebounds, while rookie Brianna Moses grabbed a career-high and game-high 10 rebounds. Perry also had ten boards to finish with her fourth double-double of the year.

Senior Andrea Hobbs had a team-best five assists as CNU dished out 17 dimes in the game, on 31 made baskets. Brandi Holland added four, while Mayumi Shill and Nicole Mitchell each had a pair. Mitchell finished 7-of-12 from the floor, scoring a game-high 16 points while filling the stat sheet with five rebounds, four steals, two assists and a blocked shot.

Frostburg State had two players in double figures, as Simone Wise finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Elaina Hummel added 10 points off the bench. Jasmine Walker grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds in the setback, while Courtney Young also grabbed eight boards.

The Captains won their fourth straight game and will have one more home game in the current homestand. CNU will host Wesley College (1-7, 0-3) as part of a CAC doubleheader on Wednesday, January 8, with tip set for 5:30 pm.
