Gwynedd Mercy Edged Out By King's, 87-83

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- A 17-1 run in the second half by King's helped overcome a 14-point deficit as the Monarchs defeated Gwynedd Mercy, 87-83, Saturday afternoon at the Griffin Complex.

The Griffins (4-7) led by as much as 60-46 early in the second and then later by 77-65 with 7:18 left only to see almost seven minutes go by without a field goal on the loss.

Senior Jordan Dominic four starters in double figures with 17 points. She would hit five of the team's 10 three-pointers. Junior Natasha Matthews recorded her second double -double in a row, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and added a personal-best four blocks.

Marissa Manning had a game-high 20 points for King's (4-7) as she went 9-for-13 at the line. As a team, the Monarchs took advantage of the charity stripe, making 33-of-39 attempts. Shae Grim and Jennifer Fabian added 18 points apiece.

After falling behind early in the first half, the Griffins (4-7) put together a scoring stretch to tie the contest at 19-19 on a three from Kristen Fuery. It was the first game back from injury for the junior in eight contests. Gwynedd would score the next 10 points to secure a double-digit lead. The Monarchs stayed within arm's reach and managed to get the hole down to three at the half (43-40).

The Griffins opened the second on a 17-6 spurt as Matthew's bucket inside gave GM their largest lead of the contest (60-46).

A three from Nicole Dougherty made it 77-65 with 7:18 showing. Unfortunately for Gwynedd, it would be the last field goal for the next 7:04 as King's would tie it on a three from Kasey Seitz with 3:01 left and take their first lead since the first on their next possession on a bucket from Grim.

King's would go 18-of-19 from the line in the second half and more importantly 7-for-8 in the final 1:33. A late three-pointer from Kelsey Yori with 14 ticks pulled GM to 85-83, but Grim hit two more at the stripe for the four-point edge.

Dougherty and fellow senior Lauren Smith finished with 11 point each, respectively. Smith also chipped in seven rebound and a career-high seven assists.

The team shot over 50% in the first stanza, but leveled out to go on a 44.3 (31-of-70) shooting clip for the game. King's was just 22-of-60 (36.7%). Both teams each hit 10 three-pointers and each drained seven of their 10 in the second half.

Gwynedd Mercy will quickly get back at it on Monday when they travel to the Nation's Capital to face Catholic University in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
