Farmingdale State - 65, Medgar Evers - 37
Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's basketball team hosted non-conference opponent Medgar Evers (2-10) today and opened the new year with a 65-37 victory. The Rams improved to 3-4 overall with the win.
Farmingdale State held a 12-2 lead over the first five minutes and led by as many as 16 points during the first half. The Rams led 31-19 at the break, behind 11 points, five rebounds and three steals from senior guard Nicky Young (Queens, N.Y.).
In the second, Farmingdale increased their held to 26 over the first four minutes and held the Cougars scoreless until the 13-minute mark. The Rams shot 62-percent from long range in the half, knocking down 5-of-8 three's, including three of those by junior guard Christina Merrill (Levittown, N.Y.).
Merrill finished with a team-high 14 points, while Young totaled 12 points, three assists and three steals. Junior guard Camille Romero (Queens, N.Y.) dished off six assists. Freshman forward Chelsea May (Baldwin, N.Y.) totaled eight points and two rebounds.
For Medgar Evers, sophomore guard Nia Tompkins (Queens, N.Y.) tallied a game-high 16 points and five rebounds. Freshman center Kimonia Mullings (Queens, N.Y.) pulled down a game-high 10 boards along with eight points.
The Rams will now host Albertus Magnus on Wednesday, January 8th at 6:00 p.m.
