BRONX, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team dropped a 71-60 contest to Anderson in the consolation game at the CUNYAC Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Sunday afternoon in Bronx, New York. The loss dropped the Panthers to 2-9 on the season, while Anderson moved to 1-9 overall.
DeAndra Scot was named to the All-CUNYAC Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Team after averaging 21.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocked shots in two games.
Scott scored the game's first five points to give Old Westbury an early lead 1:17 in the contest. Old Westbury's lead blossomed to as many as 10 when Nicole Voerg connected on a three-pointer to make it a 21-11 Panther advantage with 11:01 remaining. Anderson replied with a 17-8 run from 10:29 to 1:08 to slice the deficit to one, 29-28. Old Westbury would head into the break with a 34-30 advantage as the Panthers led the entire first-half.
Anderson took its first lead 1:30 into the second-half on a Cori Connor layup which made it 36-34. On the following possession, Voerg answered with a three-pointer to put Old Westbury back up, 37-36. Moments later, Voerg answered again with a jumper for a 41-40 lead with 15:33 showing on the second-half clock. The lead would be short lived as Jenna Wittenberg's jumper at 15:13 put Anderson in front for good, 42-41. Anderson put the game out of reach with a 21-8 run from 12:14 to 2:20 for a 69-53 lead. Old Westbury closed out the final 1:14 with a 5-0 run, but was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Scott's 20 points led all scorers to go along with her 13 rebounds to record her eighth double-double of the season. Jasmine Robinson followed with 18 points to tie her career-high, connecting on 6-of-11 from the field to go along with five steals and four assists. Voerg scored 11 points to set a career-high, connecting on 3-of-5 from three-point territory while Nikki Alexanderrecorded a personal best three blocked shots.
Connor's 19 points led three other Ravens in double-digit scoring. Mallory King added 16 points while Shelby Shaffer and Wittenberg scored 14 and 11 points, respectively. Shaffer racked up seven assists and four steals.
Old Westbury committed a season-low 14 turnovers which were converted into 15 Anderson points. Anderson won the boards battle, 48-32 in addition to scoring 17 second chance points off 18 offensive rebounds. After firing away at 40.6 percent from the field in the first-half, Old Westbury shot 23.3 percent in the second-half and finished the game at 32.3 percent (20-62). Old Westbury also shot 25 percent from three-point range (5-20) and a season-best 83.3 percent from the free-throw line (15-18). Anderson shot 44.8 percent from the floor (30-67), 12.5 percent from beyond the arc (1-8) and 83.3 percent from the charity stripe (10-12).
NYU-POLY FIGHTING JAYS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury opens the 2014 calendar year on Tuesday (January 7) when they return to the hardwood against the NYU-Poly Fighting Jays in a Skyline Conference showdown in Brooklyn, New York. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. from Jacobs Gymnasium.
