Andrade's Fifth Double-Double Helps Anchorwomen Knock Off UMass Boston, 48-30

Providence, R.I.-Sophomore forward Vandell Andrade (Providence, RI) posted her fifth double-double of the season to lead the Rhode Island College women's basketball team to a 48-30 victory over UMass Boston at The Murray Center on Saturday afternoon in Little East Conference action.

 

Andrade totaled 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds to go along with three blocks and three steals in the win for  Rhode Island College (5-4, 1-1 LEC), while freshman guard Alex Moore (West Newbury, MA) added 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.

 

The Anchorwomen deployed a tenacious defensive attack that held the Beacons to a paltry 20 percent (12-for-60) shooting effort from the field and a seven percent (1-for-14) shooting effort from beyond the three-point arc. RIC also forced a total of 21 turnovers, finishing with 14 steals as a team in the win.

 

Sophomore forward Olivia Murphy (Canton, MA) recorded 12 points, 12 rebounds and two steals in the loss for UMass Boston (6-2, 1-1 LEC), while senior guard Andrea Suffredini (Milford, MA) registered 11 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists.

 

After the Anchorwomen opened the first half on a 13-9 run, capped off by a layup from Andrade at the 7:29 mark, Moore stepped up and sank three straight three-pointers to give the hosts a 22-9 lead with 3:44 remaining in the frame. RIC eventually went into halftime with a 12-point lead, 26-14, keyed by Moore's 11 first-half points and seven points from senior guard Cara Paladino (Arlington, MA).

 

Although the Beacons opened the second half with back-to-back buckets, cutting the deficit to eight with 16:36 left to play, the Anchorwomen responded with six straight points, upping their lead to 14, 32-18, with 12:30 left to play. Spearheaded by six points from senior guard Stephanie Prusko (Lincoln, RI), RIC closed out the ballgame on a 16-12 run, en route to the 18-point victory.

 

Paladino finished with nine points, seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals for RIC, while Prusko added nine points, three rebounds and two steals. Sophomore forward Devin Hill (Danielson, CT) chipped in with five points, three rebounds, one block and one steal.

 

Junior center Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, MA) posted two points and nine rebounds for the Beacons, while senior Elisa Ogawa (Yamanashi, Japan) contributed six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

 

The Anchorwomen shot 30 percent (17-for-56) from the field, 46 percent (5-for-11) from downtown and 69 percent (9-for-13) from the free throw line.

 

UMass Boston outrebounded Rhode Island College, 46-44, and finished with 18 offensive rebounds as a team.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Bowdoin on Saturday, Jan. 4 (2 p.m.).
