Brooklyn, NY---In their conference opener, the Brooklyn College Women's Basketball Team fell at home to the College of Staten Island, 61-48, in front of a capacity crowd at West Quad, falling to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in CUNYAC play. The Dolphins improve to 5-1, 1-0.
BC began play on fire, as they built up an early 9-0 lead behind four early points from Megan Campbell, baskets by Nicole Francomano and Carissa Williams and a free throw from T'Keyah Francis.
Staten Island held strong and battle right back with a 12-1 run of their own, capped by a Victoria Gallinaro bucket, to take a 12-10 lead.
In what was a see-saw half, the Bulldogs would come right back to tie at 12, and then with 3:33 remaining, would take a two point lead of their own on a three pointer from freshman Tiffany Ruiz.
The Dolphins would end the half with the hot hand, using a 6-2 run to take a 27-25 lead into the break.
In the second half, Brooklyn would go cold from the outside, and although CSI didn't quite catch fire, they got some timely baskets and were able to open up an 11-point lead, 53-42, their biggest of the night to that point, with 6:08 remaining.
While Brooklyn made a run to cut the deficit to 53-46, they were not able to score on their next two trips, and were forced to foul late, as the Dolphins would escape with the 13-point win.
Senior forward Melanie Johnson led Staten Island with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore guard Lisa Galasso chipped in with 13 points and six assists.
Brooklyn was led by Williams' 12 points, while Campbell notched a double-double of 11 points and 11 boards.
The Bulldogs will look to even their conference mark on Tuesday when they travel to York to face the Cardinals in a 6 pm tip-off in Jamaica.
