HAMBURG, N.Y. --The Hilbert College women's basketball suffered a non-league setback tonight when they surrendered 19 first-half points to Marcedes Caver who led the Alfred State Pioneers to a 72-64 victory December 9. The Hawks slipped to 1-7 overall as Alfred State improved to 2-3. Kylie Reinholz scored 18 points and Natalie Whitman added 17 and 11 rebounds in the loss.
Caver led all scorers with 34 points making 10 of her 14 shots, hitting 4 of her 5 3-pointers and sinking 10 of 16 shots from the foul line.
The visitors jumped out to a quick lead off the tip. They picked up defensively full court after Caver banked a three point shot to give Alfred State a 23-7 lead at 13:10. The Hawks struggled to get into a rhythm offensively and gave up offensive rebounds to the Pioneers who shot to a 42-26 half time lead.
Hilbert was 8 for 29 from the floor (27.6%) but 3 for 6 from outside the arc and hit 7 of their 10 attempts at the foul line. Meanwhile, A-State shot 50% from the floor and made 4 of 12 three-point shots as they pressured the Hawks in full court most of the first half. Neither team did a great job of boxing out on defense as they both surrendered 8 and 9 offensive rebounds per team.
Alfred State maintained the pace of the game into the second half and held on to their double-digit lead. Emily Spiedel's 3-point shot cut the score to 11 (46-35) at 16:58 but A-State stretched their advantage again to 17 points on several occasions.
Spiedel's second long-distance shot started a 19-10 run which began with just over nine-minutes remaining. Reinholz' 8-points fueled the run scoring two lay-ups and making all four free throws by 1:44. Spiedel hit her third 3-pointer with 0:08 on the clock but Caver knocked down two more free throws to finish the night.
Reinholz added game-high honors with 5 assists and Kateland Ball added 3 assists and four points. Spiedel went 3 for 5 from beyond the line while Lauren Eggleston gave Hilbert six points, all in the second half.
Whitman went 6 for 8 from the charity stripe and added two steals along with her third double/double this year.
The Pioneers' Destiny Brito added a solid game scoring 8 points, but doing damage against the Hawks with her five steals and four assists as well as pulling in seven rebounds from the point guard slot.
