Cortland Women Beat Plattsburgh, 73-63, Behind Touhey's 19 Points

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Megan Touhey (Maine/Maine-Endwell) scored a game-high 19 points, including six straight points during a crucial second-half run, as Cortland defeated visiting Plattsburgh, 73-63. The Red Dragons improved to 2-0 in the SUNYAC and 6-2 overall, while the Cardinals are now 1-1 in the league and 5-3 overall.

Touhey also finished with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals and shot 7-of-11 from the floor. Senior Grace Williamson (Olean) scored 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting and junior Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) added 12 points. Sophomore Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) and junior Phoebe Byrnes (Binghamton) dished out four assists each. Cohen also registered eight rebounds and three steals and Byrnes scored nine points.

Devona Paul (Orangeburg/Tappan Zee) and Kathleen Payne (Goshen) led Plattsburgh with 18 points apiece. Paul, who was 7-of-10 from the field, also grabbed eight rebounds and blocked five shots. Payne led the team with 10 rebounds and shared the team lead with five assists. Brittany Marshall (Malone/Franklin Academy) also had five assists along with nine points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Cortland led 24-15 after two Touhey free throws with 8:09 left in the first half, but the Cardinals fought back and the teams went into halftime tied at 28-28. The game was still knotted at 38-38 after a Payne layup with 14:20 left.

The Red Dragons scored the next nine points, starting with a Cohen 3-pointer followed by three straight baskets from Touhey. Plattsburgh pulled within seven on a Marshall shot with 11:12 left, but Cortland scored the next eight points to go up 55-40 with 8:35 remaining. Junior Brittany Rando (Owego/Owego Free Academy) and Byrnes hit 3-pointers during that stretch.

Plattsburgh worked its way back to within eight on two Misha Green (New Rochelle) free throws at the 5:16 left but got no closer. Cortland sealed the win by hitting its last 10 free throws over the final 1:10 – two by Williamson, four by Rando, two by Touhey and two by Cohen.

Cortland shot 82 percent (18-of-22) from the foul line and 40 percent from the field. The Red Dragons limited the Cardinals to 33 percent shooting from the field and registered 13 steals on Plattsburgh's 19 turnovers.

Cortland will host William Smith in a non-league game on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 12 p.m.
