(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - Sophomore guard/forward Sydney Moss (St. Albans, W.Va./Boone County (Ky.)) scored a career-high 38 points to lead the eighth-ranked Thomas More College women's basketball team to a 90-67, win over Franklin College today (Sunday, December 1, 2013) on the second day of the 12th Annual Julie Costello Memorial Classic presented by Barleycorn's at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 5-0 and with the loss, the Grizzlies fall to 1-5.
Thomas More jumped out to a 15-9 lead with 13:37 to play in the first half when junior guard Stephanie Krusling (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) made a three-pointer. Franklin answered with a 27-18 run capped by two free-throws by Amber May to take a 36-33 lead with 3:14 to play in the half. The Saints closed the half on a 6-4 run to cut the lead to 40-39 at halftime when Moss made a jumper with 1:23 to play in the opening half.
The Saints opened the second half on a 16-2 run to take a 45-42 lead with 17:21 to play in the game on a Moss lay-up. Lauren DeSutter capped a Franklin 5-0 run at the 16:14 mark of the second half with a three-pointer to give the Grizzlies a 47-45 lead. Thomas More closed out the game on a 45-20 run capped by a Moss three-pointer with 34-seconds to play in the game for the 90-67 victory.
Moss completed her fourth double-double in five games as she pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. Two Saints joined her in double-figure scoring as junior forward Jenny Burgoyne (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) scored 20 and junior guard Sydni Wainscott (Erlanger, Ky./Simon Kenton) had 15. Senior guard Devin Beasley (Burlington, Ky./Conner) led the team in assists with nine.
At the conclusion of the classic Moss was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Burgoyne and Wainscott joined her on the All-Tournament Team.
The Saints return to action on Wednesday (December 4) when the travel to Grove City, Pennsylvania to play Grove City College. Tip-off for the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Grove City College Arena.
