Francess Henry scored 19 points and Sheridan Taylor recorded another double-double with 14 points and 18 rebounds for a 64-55 home victory over the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark on Sunday afternoon in the ARC Arena.
The Bearcats improve to 3-1 overall, while the Scarlet Raiders from the New Jersey Athletic Conference fall to 3-2.
With the exception of the first basket scored by the Scarlet Raiders, the Bearcats led the entire game and used solid defense to limit their opponent to 20 percent shooting (7-of-35) in the first half for a 32-22 halftime lead.
Taylor notched a first half double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Henry was busy with seven points and six rebounds for the 10 point advantage.
However, the Scarlet Raiders slowly chipped away at the lead during the second half and got as close as two points (55-53) on a pair of free throws by ShaQuanna Marshall with 2:54 left.
The Bearcats quickly responded with Alicea Ulmer scoring three straight baskets and Lynda Fields connecting on a free throw as part of a late 7-0 run to build the advantage back up to 62-53 with 1:04 left. That run was enough to secure the victory.
Taylor finished with 14 points and a season-high 18 rebounds to go along with four assists and three steals. Henry almost had a double-double with 19 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Ulmer totaled 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Ashika Kuruvilla had a productive game off the bench with six points, three rebounds and one steal in eight minutes.
The Bearcats shot a season-high 44 percent (27-for-61) and scored 15 points off 17 turnovers by the Scarlet Raiders.
