BRIDGEWATER Mass. -- Tournament MVP Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.) tallied a game-high 29 points as the Bridgewater State University women's basketball team captured the BSU Tip-Off Classic title with an 86-46 victory over Hunter College in the championship game on Saturday afternoon at the Tinsley Center.
The Bears have now captured their tournament title three times (2005, 2011, 2013) in its five year history. Today's win improves BSU record on the season to 2-1 while Hunter falls to 2-3 overall.
Williamson shot a scorching 10-12 from the field and 5-7 from beyond the arc on her way to MVP honors. She also contributed four rebounds and two steals. With today's performance, Williamson is now just seven points shy of becoming the 16th player in program history to score 1,000 points in a Bridgewater State uniform.
Bridgewater dominated from the start never allowing Hunter College to retake the lead after the Hawks had the early advantage within the first four minutes of play.
The Bears shot 46% (31-67) from the field while holding the Hawks to just 27% (14-52). From 3-point range, BSU connected on 11 of 25 attempts for a 44% clip, while Hunter only managed to sink 2 of 15 (13%) from behind the arc. Bridgewater also forced 24 turnovers, 11 of those coming on steals, . They also dominated on the boards by outrebounding Hunter 48-33 with 30 of their rebounds coming off the offensive class.
Senior forward Megan Boutilette (Charlton, Mass.) was also selected to the All-Tournament Team as she notched 14 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Rachel Kusz (Worcester, Mass.) added 12 points and three rebounds as she drained four three-pointers. Freshman forward Chanelle Melton (Brockton, Mass.) also had a strong performance coming off the bench with nine points and six boads. Senior guard Elisha Homich (Ludlow, Mass.) dished out a game high ten assists.
Senior forward Kristen Markoe (Staten Island, N.Y.) was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Hawks. Markoe tallied 12 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists in the setback. Junior center Dimitra Thomopoulos (Old Westbury, N.Y.) chipped in with 12 points, three rebounds and a pair of steals in just 17 minutes.
Both teams will return to action Tuesday evening at 5:30. BSU will host Rhode Island College while Hunter will face Baruch College.
