ATLANTA, Ga. -- Senior Kiaira Cooper scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Covenant women's basketball team over Oglethorpe 65-52 in non-conference action on Tuesday night.
Four players scored in double figures for Covenant (3-2) led by Cooper's 16 points. Morgan Woodward and Aleigha Williams each had 12 points, while Jessie Blankenship added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Cooper was 7-of-9 from the field and made a game-high three steals. She and Woodward each dished out three assists.
A 3-pointer from Williams with 17:39 left in the first half gave Covenant a 6-4 edge, a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game.
Covenant used strong shooting in the first half (12-of-21) to build a lead against the Petrels. The Scots took a 26-14 lead with 4:32 left in the period after a Cooper layup capped an 11-2 scoring run. Heading into halftime, Covenant held a 35-20 advantage.
In the second half, Covenant continue to build its lead in the early minutes of the period. Blankenship knocked down a jumper that gave the Scots a 42-24 lead almost five minutes into the half. Covenant would lead by as many as 22 points late in the contest after Liz Dougherty made it 65-43 with under a minute to play.
Oglethorpe (1-3) was led by Ciara Hughes' nine points and nine rebounds.
Covenant shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the floor and an efficient 3-of-7 from downtown. The Scots also made 18-of-29 from the charity stripe. Oglethorpe had a cold shooting night hitting 30.1 percent (22-of-73) and just 14.3 percent (4-of-28) from behind the 3-point line.
After breaking for Thanksgiving the rest of the week, the women return to the court on Saturday, December 7 against this same Oglethorpe team on Lookout Mountain. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
