Brooklyn Defeats Worcester State in Home Opener

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team earned a hard-fought 70-66 win on Saturday afternoon in the Bulldogs' 2013-2014 home opener against the Lancers of Worcester State University.

With the win, BC improves to 3-1 overall on the season; while Worcester State falls to an even 2-2 on the year.

Leading the way for Brooklyn was senior forward Megan Campbell, who netted a game and season-high 22 points, to go with seven rebounds. Juniors Carissa Williams and Nacirema Mann each finished with 12 points, while classmate Nicole Francomano contributed with a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists. Mann also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

For the Lancers, Meaghan Burns finished with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Julie Frankian (17 points) and Shannen El-Qasem (11 points) were also in double figure scoring. Cheyenne Jennings dished out seven assists.

For the game, the Bulldogs shot 40.9% (27-for-66) from field and 40.0% (4-for-10) from three. BC also shot 54.5% (12-for-22) from the free throw line.

Worcester State shot 41.1% (23-for-56) from the field and 20.0% (3-for-15) from the beyond the arc. The Lancers made the most of their free throws, going 17-for-21 (81.0%) from the charity stripe.

The first half featured a sea-saw battle, as the teams exchanged nine ties and two lead changes. Following a layup from T'Keyah Francis that tied the game at 14-14 with 13:14 remaining before the halftime break, the Lancers jumped out on a 9-2 run to take their largest lead of the half, 23-16, with 8:53 left in the period.

Brooklyn would answer with a 9-2 run of their own to tie the game once again at 25 all with 6:02 on the clock. From that point forward, neither team would lead by more than four points, as the Bulldogs would take a slim one point halftime advantage, 35-34.

The second half featured much of the same, with three ties and four lead changes. Brooklyn would lead by as many as six on a number of occasions, but the Lancers would continue to keep it close with key baskets. After a three-pointer from Kelli McPherson that tied the game at 62 all with 3:16 left in the game, BC scored six straight points to finally put the game out of reach, as the Bulldogs would go on to take the eventual 70-66 win.

Brooklyn will be back in action on Tuesday, December 3rd, as the Bulldogs will hit the road to take on New York University. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start time.
