NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Down 46-34 with 8:35 to play, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball stormed back to come within 48-47 of Vassar College with 4:18 remaining, but the Hawks hit a offensive dry spell, falling prey to a 10-2 Vassar run in in next 3:47 in suffering a hard-fought 60-53 loss to the visiting Brewers in non-conference action on Thursday night at the Hawk Center.

The Hawks made what appeared to be a comfortable Vassar victory a slugfest down the stretch, making their own run – 13-2 over a 5:52 span – to trim a 12-point deficit to a single digit. The Hawks forced five Vassar turnovers during this frenetic comeback and following back-to-back layups from sophomore guard Goldie Harrison (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) and sophomore guard Christine Rivera (Long Beach, N.Y./Valley Stream) were within 48-47 with 4:18 to play.

New Paltz then went 1-for-7 from the floor at the most inopportune time and the Brewers capitalized on two three-pointers and 4-of-4 from the free throw line to ease into the seven-point, 60-53 victory.

The loss drops the Hawks to 0-3. Vassar improves to 3-0. New Paltz has a short rest as the Hawks travel to the Stevens Institute of Technology for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday, Nov. 23. Vassar next travels to Wesleyan for a 7 pm game on Tuesday, Nov. 26.

The Brewers, who are receiving votes in the D3Hoops.com national top-40 poll, edged ahead of the Hawks at the 2:23 mark when senior guard Cydni Matsuoka ended a nearly two-minute scoring draught by draining a three-pointer from the left baseline. Just 15 seconds later, a Harrison driving layup from the right side drew New Paltz within 51-49, but the Hawks then went cold from the floor and a three-pointer from Vassar reserve guard Michelle Foreman coupled with back-to-back free throws from Matsuoka provided Vassar with a 56-49 lead with just 40 seconds remaining.

New Paltz overcame 23 turnovers, which led to 22 Vassar points. In forging its comeback, the Hawks pressured Vassar into 27 turnovers – 20 of which came in the second half – and earned 12 points off those miscues.

New Paltz took advantage of its interior game, outscoring Vassar 40-24 in points in the paint, a decided 24-16 second half edge that also served the Hawks well in their comeback.

The Brewers, led by sophomore guard Caitlyn Drakeley, who had 14 points, 10 rebounds, eight steals and five assists, kept New Paltz playing from behind for virtually the entire game. The contest was tied only once and saw just three lead changes.

Vassar built an 18-10 lead with 6:46 to play until halftime, only weather a New Paltz comeback that saw the Hawks tie the contest 20-20 and surge ahead 23-20 following a three-pointer from junior guard Ashley Riefenhauser(Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry), with 1:22 to play. A Drakeley three-pointer with 15 seconds remaining put Vassar ahead 25-23 at halftime. Drakeley scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half.

New Paltz saw Harrison tally 12 points, with clutch performances coming down the stretch from junior guard Shannon Walker (Vestel, N.Y./Vestel), who tallied eight points, freshman forward Courtney Irby (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), who also tallied eight points, and Riefenhauser, who earned her eight tallies off a pair of clutch three-pointers. Irby led the Hawks with 11 rebounds.

Vassar got a 15-point effort from Matsuoka and 12 points from senior forward Hannah Senftleber. Drakeley was the rebounding leader with 10 boards, followed by seven from junior guard Michaela Janowski.
