ROCHESTER, N .Y. – Visiting Fredonia rallied from a double-digit second-half deficit against Nazareth in a non-conference women's basketball game Tuesday to defeat the Golden Flyers, 78-70, at the Kidera Gymnasium. Sophomore Lindsey Kelly paced Nazareth with 18 points, but Fredonia's Becky Hebert combined game highs in points (25) and rebounds (11).
Fredonia improved to 2-1 overall, while Nazareth dropped to 1-2.
After trailing early on, Nazareth rallied to take a 36-32 halftime lead and then expanded that advantage to as many as 12 points, 52-40, with less than 13 minutes to play. The Blue Devils rallied as Hebert scored 19 of her points after the intermission and Jaimie Wright added 11 of her 22.
Fredonia tied the score at 62-62 on a free throw by Sabrina Macauley, who finished with 15 points. Hebert, who went 11-for-11 from the free throw line, then hit a pair of foul shots with 4:04 left to give the Blue Devils the lead for good at 64-62.
Nazareth was still within two points, 68-66, following a basket by Veronica Peck with 2:40 left, but Fredonia stayed in front by making foul shots down the stretch. Alicia Mikowicz hit four free throws and Warren hit two more in the closing minute. Fredonia went 28-for-35 (80 percent) from the line in the game, including 22-for-28 (78.6 percent) in the second half.
Nazareth trailed 21-12 in the first 12 minutes of play, but rallied on the strength of some accurate outside shooting. Peck nailed a three-pointer with 3:46 to play in the half to pull the Golden Flyers to within four, 27-23, then senior Anna Wicks came off the bench to hit three in a row in the span of 1:20 to secure the lead for Nazareth at 32-30. Baskets by Melissa Reeves and Hayley Spoljaric in the closing seconds extended the lead to 36-32 at the break.
Nazareth's lead grew to 48-38 early in the second half as Julia Brew nailed a pair of three-pointers and then found Kelly on the right block for a layup. Two free throws each by Hannah Runyon and by Colby McCartney stretched the lead to 52-40 with 12:24 left.
Fredonia chipped away and closed to within 54-51 on two free throws by Warren with under 10 minutes to play. Senior Megan Morrison answered for Nazareth with back-to-back three-pointers to push Nazareth's lead back to nine, 60-51, with 8:33 to play.
The Blue Devils took control after that, outscoring Nazareth 27-10 the rest of the way.
Kelly finished with a team-high eight rebounds for Nazareth, while Brew added 11 points. Peck and Wicks each had nine. Nazareth shot 9-for-16 from three-point range overall (56.3 percnet), but just 41.4 percent (24-for-58) overall.
Nazareth returns to action Thursday to visit Cazenovia in a non-conference game at 5 p.m.
