Warhawks Top Chicago on the Road

The Warhawks grabbed an early lead opening with the first five points of the game. The Maroons answered with a 10-2 run to take their first lead, 10-7 with 16:41 remaining in the half. Chicago would lead by as much as six, 23-17 at the 11:28 mark. With the scoreboard showing 25-20 in favor of the Maroons, UW-Whitewater ran off seven straight points to regain the lead. UW-W held the lead the rest of the half heading into intermission with a 39-35 lead.

The Warhawks shot just 36% compared to 43% for Chicago. UW-W scored 15 points of 16 turnovers to hold the lead at the end of the first half. Mary Merg led all scorers with 12 points in the first twenty minutes. Amy Mandrell posted 10 points and added eight boards in the first half.

Chicago scored the first four points of the second half to tie it up 39-39 with 18:53 remaining. Whitewater 16-4 run pushed the lead into double figures, 55-43 with 14:08 left in the half. For the next three minutes, the game looked more like a track meet with both teams pushing the ball. The Maroons strung eight points in a row together to whittle the lead to four 58-54 with 11:16 left on the clock. 

Whitewater quickly pushed the lead back to double digits, 68-59 at the 8:41 mark. The margin would drop below ten points two times the rest of the way hitting nine at 7:32 and 7:01. The Warhawks extended the lead to as much as 17, 84-67 after a Kaitlyn Thill led to a fastbreak layup for Reilly Stewart with 3:23 remaining in the game. UW-W ran down the clock as much as possible on each possession leading to the final 90-76.

UW-W totaled 30 points off turnovers compared to just 11 for Chicago. The Warhawks forced 28 turnovers and tallied 16 steals in the game. Whitewater closed that gap in the margin in shooting statistics finishing the game 45% from the field. Chicago shot 43% from the floor and held the advantage on the boards 45-40.

Mandrell added 10 points and six rebounds in the second half to notch a double-double with 20 points and 14 boards in the game. Thill posted 18 points including 10-12 from the free throw line adding seven assists and seven steals. Three Warhawks joined Mandrell and Thill in double figures. Merg recorded 17 points, Abbie Reeves had 15 including nine from behind the arc and Steward added 11. 

The Warhawks are 3-0 this season and hand Chicago their first loss of 2013-14. The Maroons fall to 2-1. 

UW-W will head to Madison for their fourth straight road game this season to take on Edgewood College Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00. Whitewater will play in front of their home crowd for the first time this season Wednesday, November 27. The Warhawks play host to Illinois Wesleyan for a 6:00 scheduled start time.
