WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) recorder her first collegiate double-double with sixteen points and eleven rebounds, but it wasn't enough to push Mount Ida to victory, as the Mustangs fell 52-46 to Eastern Nazarene College in the consolation game of the Brandeis University Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament.
Martinez had four blocks and five steals in the game and, along with a matching eleven-rebound effort from junior Jenn Rafuse (Brockton, Mass.), helped the Mustangs outrebound their opponents 52-46.
The Lions were led by 13 points from freshman Nicole Greer (Odenton, Md.), who came off the bench and played 23 minutes, adding four steals.
Thefts played a big part in the win for Eastern Nazarene, who came up with 22 steals, led by six by Tyshay Montgmery (Woodlwan, Md.), who also led the squad in rebounding with eight caroms.
The Green and White outscored the Lions after halftime, where they briefly took the lead after finding themselves with a seven-point deficit at the break.
Mount Ida led 18-15 with three and a half minutes remaining in the first half, which the Lions ended on a 12-2 run, capped by a three-pointer by Katelyn Memory at the buzzer (Kiowa, Colo.).
A 9-0 run to start the second half had Mount Ida up by a pair, but Eastern Nazarene turned around and scored eleven unanswered points themselves to take the lead for good, though the Mustangs would pull within two points again on a three-point jumper by Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, Conn.), who had nine points and seven rebounds.
Fedigan was named to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the weekend, averaging 9.0 points and 6.5 rebounds over the two games of the Invitational.
Rafuse scored six points and had three assists for Mount Ida, while freshman Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) contributed six points and seven rebounds off the bench.
For Eastern Nazarene, starter Michelle Herrera (Santa Barbara, Calif.), who scored eleven points, and substitute Lucy Santos (Vallejo, Calif.), with ten points, were the other players in double figures.
The Lions shot 32% from the field in the opening period while the Mustangs connected on 29% of their shot attempts.
Mount Ida (0-2) will return to Newton for their home opener on Tuesday night when they welcome in Westfield State for a 6:00 pm tip.
The Lions (1-1) will host Framingham State the same time in their own home opener.
